Beauty and the Vet
Mon Oct 09 2006

Beauty had her first visit to the Veterinarian who will be seeing her periodically.  Well, maybe not for awhile.  She's by way of producing an offspring--another vet maybe?

Anyway, she is pronounced a proper kitten and in good health.  She weighs 3 pounds 1 ounce.  She had her first feline leukemia shot, first deworming med (although I think Becke already dewormed the kittens). Advantage for protection against fleas, and a recommendation for monthly treatment with Advantage.   A note to spay at 6 months, which will be in January.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing: silence from the carrier.  I've never had a cat that didn't complain loudly from the carrier.  But she went to sleep!!  Different story coming home, though.  Very noisy.  And I expect that the next time she sees the carrier she will enter under vociferous protest.

Banshee split the scene the moment he caught scent of Beauty.  "Whooo! there's that smell.  I'm outta here."  He runs away as if he had a fire on the end of his tail.

While we were waiting for the vet to come into the exam room, Beauty was exploring everything.  I had to grab her from under some furniture, as I was afraid she'd get into a corner and we wouldn't be able to get to her without moving some heavy stuff.  She was fine until doors started opening and closing and strange voices emitting from somewher.  However the vet said that she behaved very well in the back room while getting her shots and medicines.  She went back in her carrier willingly enough (along with a bit of baby food on a plate), but once in the car, the yowling started.

I should have gotten gas before we headed for the vet, but I forgot I was low, and didn't look at the fuel gauge.  In the car coming home, I did notice and began looking for my favorite brand.  I stopped at one station that usually has the best prices, but couldn't get to a pump, so I headed out for another station that has equally good prices, but it's a little farther on.  All this while, checking the gauge which is perilously close to Empty!  It took $23 and change to fill the tank, so I know I was coasting on fumes.

Of course, Miss Beauty was complaining the whole time.

When we got home and I opened the door to the carrier, she shot out as if shot from a cannon.  I'm guessing the next trip will not be as (mostly) uneventful as this one was.  About four weeks, she's due for the  second round of feline leukemia inoculation, deworming and Advantage.  And cats have a long memory.

Shalom

Try taking one on a five hour trip as we have Hamlet a time or two. It's WAY worse than having a two year old in the back seat!!!

There's a way to de-condition them towards the crate to make future trips easier. Once a week, open a can of tuna and put a little on the plate and into the crate. When she goes in, close the door until she is done eating. As time goes on, leave her inside the crate for a little bit longer and longer. From time to time, leave her in the crate and carry it to another room before letting her out of it.
This worked with horses and a horse trailer and dogs with their dog crates, I can't see why the same thing wouldn't work with cats.

I surely don't envy you your next trip to the vet!

As for the crate, Taz LOVES his crate! He lived in it when he was a baby, and even now he thinks of it as a safe haven. If he can, he sleeps in it whenever he's not feeling quite up to snuff, and on top of it most of the time, just like Snoopy and his dog house.

    Hugs,
    ~Cali

I think feeding her in there is a great idea! It should work great!

I'm cat-less now (though wouldn't mind to have one, it just isn't in the cards) but remember very well the last time I had to take a cat to the vet. I think I still have scars and they're probably still finding black cat hair in the car I drove back then. Poor thing wouldn't let me put her down and she did nothing but shed great gobs of hair. I swore I'd never take her back again (and didn't, but only because my mother has the cat in Florida now), it just seemed so cruel!

I really need to get my cats in to see the vet. It's been awhile for them. Now that I'm not working I will have plenty of time to do so.

Glad her visit went well and she is happy and healthy.

Yes, cats DO have impressive memories! Chloe still hates spray bottles of any sort, although it's been a few months since we last sprayed her with Frontline.

Beauty is a darling baby angel kitten.

Love to the girls and the kitties!

    Love,
    E.L.
