My computer was acting like it had a bellyache, or a sore toe...whatever. It just wasn't acting right. Fortunately, I found a computer doctor who makes house calls. He gave my recalcitrant cyber connection a thorough checkup, and has pronounced it well.
To the tune of almost $300.00.
I also have a new drive: E. It's a CD burner, and now I have instructions on how to transfer my precious Saved stuff to a CD in case of future bellyaches. Well, more like a totally incapacitating migraine.
The nice young computer doctor left me with a small manual entitled Nerds On Call, or How To Use Nerd Tools For Non-Nerds.
Note to Marian: I now have Fire Fox AVG, as you suggested.
The screen should no longer freeze, but since it didn't freeze while the puter doc was working, he couldn't be sure if he corrected the problem. If the freeze continues, he says it's probably a hardware problem. *sigh* I've had enough of those.
Log-in procedure went faster today, but I think I may go to DSL eventually because nothing else went faster. But that means notifying all my address book about the change of name, and I'm not sure I'm up to that right now. OK, so I'll stay poky for awhile longer.

Computers. $#@%$#@!!!!
Cars. $#@%$#@!!!
Shalom! - From:Dustbunny3 (Legacy)On:Thu Apr 05 2007Yea I feel the pain for been there and I will admit DSL or Cable ISP is a world faster. But help desk in any are a endless merry go round.
- From:Mamallama (Legacy)On:Thu Apr 05 2007$300.00!! Ouch.
DSL is definately worth the switch. You will be so much happier with the faster system. I've had it for over a year and would never go back to dial up.
Hugs, Tiggs - From:MissTick (Legacy)On:Thu Apr 05 2007$300???!!! isn't it a price for a new box? Don't know your IT market, but this seems way too much for "possibly sorted" issue.
and also if you switch to DSL with the same ISP that you have your dial up now, then your e-mail address will stay the same. - From:FishCreekBride (Legacy)On:Fri Apr 06 2007Aren't computers fun! Hopefully, the computer doctor fixed all the problems and you'll run smoothly from now on.
- From:Camomille (Legacy)On:Sat Apr 07 2007I hate it when my computer runs slow or freezes up, or does anything that slows me down! I've been very spoiled by having computers at work where all is optimal. I'm very happy to have broadband rather than a phone hookup right now.
Sounds like you are getting 'up to speed' on the technical side! I love the 'dummies' books too, they have helped me out, although I'd love to take a class on computer basics. I know how to use the programs, I just don't understand the nuts and bolts (or should I say motherboards and chips?).
Anyway, computers are so important as a means of communication! It is so wonderful to have a window on the world and friends at your fingertips.
~me - From:Dreamerbooks2003 (Legacy)On:Mon Apr 09 2007I understand you totally.
one thing is.. deardiary land has been very , very slow lately.. and that isn't your computers fault.. It is the site.. So yeah.
my puter has been freezing up also.. during log in.. do you have an anti-virus program?? cuz I think mine was why my log on took forever.. I'm not going to have norton again!!!
best wishes
p - From:Welshamethyst (Legacy)On:Wed Apr 11 2007Sorry to hear that your 'puter has been pulling pranks. That's never fun. That price was just horrid. I heard our computer geek at work today tell the new marketing guy that he'd rebuild one for $98 labor.
RYC: I told B that I detested my Dr. but knew there was a new PA-C in the practice whom I'd never seen so couldn't give a recommendation one way or the other. While he was flamming mad when he came back it wasn't toward me. He understood that I gave a blind recommendation. I'd told him that I wanted his opinion of her because I'm on the fence about finding another Dr. and if the PA-C was crap I was leaving.
