One mad cat
Sat Mar 18 2006

KK got his nails trimmed.  It was not his idea.  No how.  No way.

Megan came over Friday to do the job.  She wrapped him snugly in a large, heavy towel, all the time crooning to him.  That part wasn't so bad.  At least the alarm bells hadn't started ringing.  However....

The first clip began the struggle.  Ever hear the Siamese squall?  We did.  His tail was slashing back and forth.  He was struggling to get out of the binding.  And he did manage to get one leg out.  But that got wrapped up pretty quickly.  But the struggle was just beginning.

Growl.  Hiss. Squall.  Spit.  Repeat.  And the while trying to get out of the confinement.  I had to grab his head because he was absolutely bent on trying to bite Megan.  Now this cat weighs less than ten pounds.  He's still technically a kitten, but he's probably reached his mature size, or close to it.  His parents are both smaller than the standard Siamese, so I think he won't be a very big cat, ever.  He's long and lean, very muscular, a very nice representation of what a Siamese is supposed to look like.  I was holding his head so he couldn't bite Megan, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy.   Where does that strength come from in that small package?  And the language!!!

We finally got the job done--with me holding tightly and Megan clipping away.  When he was released he looked us both over with such an indignant snarl!  Megan tried to catch him and soothe him, but KK was having none of that.  For the rest of the day he was One Mad Cat, and wouldn't even come near me until goodies time, later that evening.

KK is having trouble clinging to the backs of chairs, his launching point to the windowsill.  One of his favorite resting places is on the back of my recliner, and he was having to scrabble a bit to stay there if I moved around a bit.  But that will change as soon as the nails grow a little and develop points again.  But in the meantime, I'm hoping some of my scars will have time to heal.

I AM A BATHTUB

Cats are clean animals.  Several times during the day I see KK and Banshee attending to certain spots.  Preening and smoothing.  But for a real honest-to-goodness clean-up, they settle on my lap.  Especially when I'm about to take a little snooze in my recliner.  They seem to know, especially KK, when I'm going to settle down for awhile, and that's the signal for a BATH.  A thorough nose to tail wash-up.  On my lap.

I wonder why Banshee doesn't have trouble with fur balls?  He's a short-hair, but constantly shedding.  All year round.  Constantly.  If he's shedding that much hair, surely he's ingesting a lot of it when he cleaning himself.  Don't ever wear dark colored clothes if you come to visit me.  His hair is everywhere.  Of course dark clothes make a nice contrast for all that white fur.

Shalom

Ooh that's my least favorite thing to do with cats, trimming their nails. The only suggestion I'd have for trying next time because it helped just a bare teeny bit when we'd do it many moons ago when there were cats in the house - give them a good solid catnip fix. Let them tear around the house like crazy for a while, wear themselves out somewhat. It doesn't make it easier to clip the nails but they do tend to be a bit more relaxed when you're trying to catch them. Somehow they always knew what you were up to after that first session.

Oh yes I remember the proceedure well. It is a wild fight of wills and the cat wins as scars will remind ONE. I did break one cat from tearing up a couch to sharping his claws with a squirt bottle with water in it. IT worked in about two days for he hated being wet. You got the strength right for they have it in spades.

When I moved out of the last apartment back here to this one, I missed a step and went flying foward onto cement. I bruised my knees and caught the fall with my wrist. I don't think it's anything serious - I believe I must have slept on it wrong last night. For awhile, I couldn't put any pressure at all on it but it mostly seems fine now except for the occasional pang. I didn't see the point in going to the doctor without insurance unless I couldn't move it. I can move it all around, it's just when I push against something that I get the sharp pangs.

I think my Lenny cat is part Siamese. He's the hardest of the two to trim his nails. Squiggy seems to like having a manicure. With Len, I let him no there is to be no funny business and I hold him in a vice grip and just get it over with. He's getting better but I have a long scar on my thigh from the first time I ever tried to clip his nails!

My cats do the same thing as far as bathing.

Well, must get back to the business of unpacking and organizing! Being right next to the laundry room here, I can hear that someone else is doing theirs so mine will have to wait a bit. It is VERY nice being right next door to the washer and dryer! I love it. Even more convenient than when I lived in a house as our washer and dryer were downstairs. Life is good!

    Bye for now,
    *smile*

Hehehehe. Cats are just sooooo much fun, aren't they???

Next time when you trim nails, have Megan clamp on to the scrubb of his neck with one hand and his back feet with the other (with him on his back) and streeeeeeeeetch him out as far as he will go. This in now way hurts him but it is the best restraint imaginable. Call your vet and ask if you don't believe me. It's called The Kitty Stretch.

    Dear Chaya,

I am used to cats and cat hair so I have no problems coming to visit you.

I think KK is adorable. As for being One Mad Cat: Congratulations -- you have a normal healthy tom on your hands. Put yourself in his paws. Would you have liked to have your claws removed?

Yes, we've always known that Siamese are highly vocal and musically-inclined cats. Come cat mating season, the Siamese in the neighborhood would be screaming their messages of undying love to one another from rooftops and fence posts.

    Love to Banshee and KK!

    Love,
    E.L.
