RLS, or To Sleep or Not
Tue Oct 31 2006

If the Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) were confined to the legs, it might not be so bad, but my whole body gets involved in the jerks, twitches and ants-crawling-on-the-legs feeling.  I feel spastic.

Trouble is, it isn't only at night any more.  It's worse at night, but it isn't confined to the sleep hours.  Well, partly sleep hours in the afternoon. There are times I'd dearly love to take a nap.

So...last night I took all my pills, including the dopamine that's supposed to control the twitches.  I wish.  So I took an Ambien.  The twitches/spasms were so strong by that time that the sleeping pill was ineffective.

Last resort: A hot-hot bath.  Usually does the trick, but not always.  I might could drown myself some night if I don't quit dozing in the tub.  But doze I did.  Until a *splash*  *yeow!* *frantic scramble* woke me from the doze.  Missy was trying to negotiate the faucets at the head of the tub.  She really dunked herself this time.  By the time I gained upright position, she was gone.  Left a trail of wet.  By the time I finally roused myself from the tub and into bed, she had mostly dried herself off.  Still damp around the shoulders and head.

I did sleep after taking another pill, but this was 4:00 am.  And I woke again at 6:00.  Tried lingering in bed, but by 6:30 gave it up as a bad job.  Now, that's way too early for me to start my day.  I staggered around a bit, recited the Morning Blessings, then took my morning pills at 7:00.  Had some tea and a bit of breakfast.  Read the paper and went back to bed at 10:00 for another hour and a half.  Might still be asleep except for the phone ringing.  Wrong number.  BAH!!!

Managed to do a bit of grocery shopping and came home exhausted.  What I would give for a nap right now.  But the legs are jittering again.  The doctor hasn't okayed the dopamine for daytime use, so maybe I'll get up and take a walk.  That helps.  For a while.

Shalom

PS: I think I'd better proofread this before I click The Button.  Not sure I'm making much sense.

Chaya, I feel your pain. Boy, do I ever feel your pain. My RLS sometimes gets my whole body going, too. It really is hell on earth.
    Love,
    ~Cali

Oh I can sympathize with you my friend. I get RLS all over my body too and it drives me crazy. Sounds like the bath helped. I should try that the next time.

    Cheers,
    Cyndi

Oh! My poor dear Chaya! Insomnia is a terrible thing to have to suffer. Like many my age, I try to catch some sleep at every opportunity and am blessed to be able to sleep in any condition: In stuffy rooms, damp tents and during bumpy Jeep rides and choppy boat rides. It is dreadful not being able to sleep. I wish I could give you some of my sleepiness.

I am really worried about you sleeping in the bath the way you do. You really shouldn't! A hot-hot bath isn't healthy either. Don't you know that very hot water dehydrates the skin and causes wrinkles? In addition, the chlorine in tap water reacts chemically to heat, and can become toxic when inhaled.

I wish I could send you a foot reflexology machine. That might help you feel more relaxed and sleep better. My parents have one. It isn't expensive. We got ours free, from redeeming credit card gift points. Alas, it would cost a bomb for me to mail you one. I am only mailing you a light package for Hanukkah.

Poor little Missy! What a fright she must have suffered! Oh the indignity! She lost her balance! Poor little one!

    Lots of Love,
    E.L.
