The children had a wonderful time with various games, and the adults enjoyed watching them.
And we made LOTS of noise at the mention of the evil Haman's name during the reading of the Megillah. (For those of you who don't know the story, read the Book of Esther.)
There were three children appointed to judge the adult costumes. We had to tell the children what we were supposed to represent. And three prizes awared. I didn't get a mention because I wasn't in a Purim-related costume, but I did get a consolation prize for makeup. I'll try to get a picture and post it here. I shaved my eyebrows so I could paint Japanese-looking eyebrows, so today I'm just all eyes. They'll grow back, and in the meantime, I'll just use the eyebrow pencil and draw them.
After the adult costumes were judged, three adults were called to act as judges for the childrens' costumes. It was hard to decide, as there were many good ones. We finally settled on Pippi Longstockings, a Spanish singer (girls), a cowboy and a zoot-suiter (boys).
Pippi Longstockings also won the Limbo prize. This was for the kids, but one of the rabbis, a long lanky fellow, joined in. He was amazing. He got under the limbo maybe two and a half feet from the floor, and then turned around and jumped over it. He didn't get a prize, but he got lots of laughs and clapping.
I wearied before the party was over, so I don't know how long it lasted. Probably another couple hours, at least. I came home with a Purim care package which will be part of my Sabbath dinner tonight.
It was fun, and I think I'll try it again next year. I haven't done stage makeup since I was in theater in high school, but the touch is still there.
I won't be going to the evening service today, as I'm really tired. I'll light my candles and read the service here at home. And enjoy my Purim Sabbath dinner.
Shalom
