Yesterday's DD
Tue May 06 2008

Twice I tried to send out an entry, and twice my screen blacked out before I could click The Button.  The third time, DD was going crazy. I couldn't read any diaries (...cannot display this page messages), and when I finally clicked on the third  attempt, DD just simply ate the entry and disappeared.  So I'm going to try one.more.time.  Here it is.

This is the third time I'm trying to enter this. My puter keeps blacking out on me.

Anyway. . .

I like to think I'm smarter than the A.ver.age Bear, and I think Missy has made it her life's work to prove that I'm not as smart as I think I am. Yup, she got out again this evening.

She was way off there in the living room when I opened the front door to retrieve my indoor slippers that I'd left parked on the patio. All of a sudden a beige and dark brown flash went out the door, over the barrier and away she goes!

All my cajoling and threats were for naught [Wouldn't you think I'd learn? Never worked the other times she got out], so I corralled the other cats and sequestered them behind closed doors, all the while being called all kinds of names in the catly lexicon. I left the door open a bit so Missy could come back in when she wanted back in.

So what have I learned from this? That Missy is an escape artist and she'll bide her time. Which is to say: Nothing.

Bless

Sounds more like a puter problem! Cat will test you for sure but try placing a small dish milk outside for they do get hungry and then want in for a NAP.

It's funny, but I've been thinking lately that I'd like to buy one of those big crossword puzzle books. I love doing them!

Not long ago I bought a really nice book of crosswords on good white paper in a comfortable size to hold, even in a ring type binder... heaven!

Then I started to work them.... what the????

I turned it over and looked on the back...

    Printed in the UK.

    Curses!

I have resigned myself to looking up answers to some of the clues, and keep track of how many times I do that. I consider it a success if I only have to look up 4!

Is Missy back yet? The naughty girl! Scaring you like that. She is spayed, isn't she? Then she won't stay outside for long. Just a quick tour of the neighborhood and she'll be back.

Good on you for contributing to the school's recycling program! If everyone did that, we'd have to mine/harvest/exploit less natural resources. Plus recycling is often less polluting than manufacturing from raw materials.

Crossword puzzles are beyond me, probably because so much of it is related to popular culture, and I know jack-squat about singers, actors, movies and celebrities.

Sudoku is easy. I keep breaking my own time record at it. It has nothing to do with numbers. Here's my personal strategy:
    1. Choose an easy-intermediate puzzle so you don't get disheartened as a beginner.
    2. Look at the 1st three vertical columns. Are there twos of anything? If so, fill in the third in the empty column, but ONLY if it is a definite answer. Never do guesswork, or you'll get it all wrong.
    3. After filling in any number, check against the horizontal rows to see if it creates 2 of anything too, so you could fill it in. With every new number you fill in, check against the rows and columns and see if there are any gaps you could fill in.
    4. Do all 3 sets of vertical columns. Then fill in any boxes, rows or columns where 7-8 boxes are already filled. Again, check against the rows and columns.
    5. Now do the horizontal rows. Any gaps to fill in? Attagirl. Much easier now, isn't it?
    6. You should be able to complete a level 1 or level 2 Sudoku puzzle in under 4 minutes by the end of your first week.

It's logic, not numbers. Like when your grandchildren play Tetris. The bricks are arranged to fit into the gaps. It's fun. It's addictive. It keeps your brain fit and supple.

    Lots of Love,
    E.L.
