Never Cry Wolf
Mon Jan 12 2004

There hasn't been much to write about the last couple days, but today I got to play with the wolves. Of course they were caged, but still....

Never Cry Wolf Rescue & Adoptions was founded to rescue wolves that had been raised as pets, then abandoned after they became unmanageable. These wolves were born in captivity and can't be returned to the wild. But they can be used to teach people about wolves, and mostly about the fact that THEY ARE NOT PETS!

Anyway, I went and got Rena, and we came back to the Petco near my place and played with Tika (female), Boomer and Rugby (males). Boomer is the alpha. He's big, has a thick, coarse coat, and gives wolfie kisses.

In the brochure I picked up it says "Never Cry Wolf Rescue & Adoptions can be seen with their wolves most weekends in Old Sacramento, Apple Hill (Sep-Dec) and Sacramento area Petco stores. (weather permitting)"

They also present a program at school assemblies. Rena is going to look into the possibility of "show and tell" at her school.

I also got a bumper sticker "Little Red Riding Hood Lied. Ain't no big bad wolf." I don't like bumper stickers. They get messy if you get over-enthusiastic, and they're distracting to other drivers who are trying to get close enough to read them. However, this one is going on my car.

Rugby rolled over and asked for a tummy rub, which Rena was only too happy to give him. Later, Boomer decided he'd like a tummy rub, too, which he got. But Tika wasn't much interested. After awhile the wolves decided it was nap time, but when a group of new admirers showed up, they decided nap time was over.

These are very gentle animals, well socialized, love to be petted, and they charm small children. There was also a dog adoption going on at the same time, and one of the adoptees was yelping. I think it was Boomer that let out a little howl in response. But all the wolves were very much interested in the dogs that were being handled as possible adoptees.

I promised Rena I would buy her a set of Harry Potter, and as we were leaving Petco, I noticed that Barnes & Noble was right across the street. So now Rena has her set of Harry Potter. I probably ought to read at least one of those books and find out what all the hooraw is about. But that'll have to wait until I finish the four books I'm currently reading.

Today turned out to be very un-January-ish. It was foggy this morning, but after the fog cleared it turned out to be a pleasantly balmy day to be out and about. The weather page predicted 63 degrees today, and it probably was at least that. But rain is predicted again for tomorrow. Well, one balmy day a week is not bad in mid-winter.

The next time the wolves are scheduled for display will be in San Mateo, but I don't believe I want to drive that far. I'll wait until they come back to Sacramento. Maybe even go visit the sanctuary.

That's my day on Sunday, 11 January.

Shalom.

    Love the bumper sticker!

My daughter Erin just finished the latest of the Harry Potter books so she is all caught up. I'm thinking I should start over with the first one again. I read that one to her before she could read herself, and now she just read that last HUGE book herself in a matter of days! Whoah! I've always enjoyed fantasy types of books, for isntance, 'The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe'. I picked that first Harry Potter book up off the shelf because of the type of book it was, before anyone really even heard of Harry Potter, so we've always been a bit ahead of the gang with them. They are very enjoyable books. If I read what you wrote correctly, you have not read any of them yet? If that's so I'd start at the beginning with the first book. You will have to get to know the characters, I think.

Anyhow! Glad you had an enjoyable weekend. *smile*

I wanna meet the wolves, too! I had a friend that had a wolf. She was wonderful. Very protective of the children. She never had any problems with her wolf, though. Unfortunately, when her husband left her and kidnapped the children (and told them she was dead!) he murdered the wolf, (and all her other pets) too. A few months after that happened, he was investigated by the FBI because they thought he was the Unibomer! Luckily, she had her kids back by that time.

San Mateo is a bit of a drive...
I have the first Harry Potter book, if I ever get to it. I think I have gotten out of the habit of reading for pleasure, and can't seem to get back into it.

I had to admit that when I saw a marker in Kazakhstan my eyebrows shot up a bit.
    Kazakhstan... California... same thing, right?
    LOL

I never have time to read with my busy life. I was wondering what all the big fuss was about Harry Potter too so hubby bought the first movie. I watched it and when it was done I couldn't wait for the second one to come out. Now I'm patiently waiting for the third one. I think it comes out this spring or summer. I'm sure the books go into much more detail but I'm more of a movie person.

I've really enjoyed your diary so far. I think I'm going to add you to my friends list so I can be sure to read more.
