My husband played poker with his army buddies about once a week. It was good that he had a night out with the guys, but I love to play cards, any game, but especially poker. So once I asked if I might sit in on a game. He said he'd ask the guys, because they don't usually like to invite their wives/girlfriends to guy things.
I had already met all the poker buddies because Stan had brought them home for meals and gab and just buddy stuff. So it wasn't as if I were a stranger muscling in their games.
So, Stan asked, and they said Sure! Well, on the way to the the game site (on base), Stan coached me on the "courtesies," like don't play girlie games with all kinds of funny rules and wild cards. Hey, I didn't even know games like that. I learned 5- or 7-card stud and 5-card draw. I was a SERIOUS poker player!
Well, to make a long story short, I won enough money to cover my husband's losses, and brought home more than I took to start with. That was the end of my poker playing with the boys. My husband always made excuses after that for my not sitting in another game.
I guess I embarrassed him. But the cards were good to me that night. Aaah, well.
I might add, that when your introduction to the game is Strip Poker, you learn rather quickly to evaluate the hand, and when to fold! Especially when to fold.
