The food was so good, as usual. The company exceptional. The entertainment could have gone on another hour.
I love Klezmer. It invites one to get up and dance. And some did. Including the Rabbi of the sponsoring synagogue. It was so obvious that he enjoyed the music, as he was singing along with some of the songs. He's a pretty nice guy too. I met him some ten-plus years ago, I'm not a member of his congregation, yet he calls me by name whenever we meet, whether in a public place or at Leisure League. His memory is memorable.
River City Klezmer Band is a fairly new organization, but the musicians have been around in another incarnation. I've heard accordion all my life playing polkas and dance music of several varieties. But I've never heard one wail. Wail that Middle-East minor key sound that goes right to the heart. Now the clarinet is admirably suited to that sound. And the violin. But the Klezmers don't have a violin. Yet. The string bass player is the "boss" of the group, and his wife is the singer.
If you don't know Klezmer, get acquainted with it. I'm sure your local music store can guide you.
I spoke with the accordion player, and he told me that he was new to Klezmer. Not that you'd notice. He did a very nice job of heading the group. He also told me that the accordion he was playing was 40! years old. His father bought it for him and paid $1,500 for it. It would now sell for over $13,000!!!
So if any of you out there have a squeeze box 40 years old, insure it!
Bless

- From:Mamallama (Legacy)On:Fri Feb 08 2008The Rabbi's memory may be good, but I bet it has more to do with unforgetable you. :o)
Glad you had a good time.
Hugs, Tiggs - From:Welshamethyst (Legacy)On:Fri Feb 08 2008I was reminded of you today when out at the local mall. There's a club for older local women here called The Red Hats. They get together once a month dressed in purple outfits and outrageous red hats! They were having a special gathering today where they'd made their own hats out of lampshades *laffs*. Some of them were truly awesome!
- From:ImNotLisa (Legacy)On:Fri Feb 08 2008My grandfather had an accordion when I was a little girl. I remember him taking it out of that huge case and the music that would come from it. I always think of him when I hear or see one.
