Wild weather
Tue Feb 22 2005

We had tornados touch down in Sacramento today. The news reports hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. One tornado touched down about five miles from where I live, and I was barely aware of a storm. I've spent hours in front of this screen trying to clean out my mailbox, and there's destruction going on all around me.

The news showed pictures taken by residents of the funnels in their neighborhoods, and also of shingles being blown off of roofs, and street signs being hurled through the air. One man reported that the force of the wind lifted his car about 15 inches off the roadway and dropped him back down onto the street, and the windows of his car were shattered. His comment was "And we're not even in Kansas." What an experience!! Steel garage doors were twisted all out of shape. Many windows shattered, and fences torn from their moorings and scattered all about.

No reports of injuries, thank God!!

The news also showed a 30-foot sinkhole in Southern California, and rainwater flowing over the edge like a waterfall. There was a car at the bottom of the hole, and some kind of roadwork vehicle. A sewer worker was reported killed when he fell into the hole. How did he fall in? I don't remember that that was reported.

The news also showed thunder and lightning storms in the mountains. I wonder...can tornados develop in the mountains?

I need to call my granddaughter who lives in SoCal in an area where there could be mud slides. I hope she's safe.

I have to get up early tomorrow, so I guess I'll head for bed, and try to clean out the mailbox in the afternoon.

Goodnight, all.

Oh, I pray and hope everybody's safe, Chaya!

I am so very relieved to hear that you are all right! The idea of being pulled up and away by a twister is very, very terrifying. I saw pics of the destruction they cause, and my heart goes out to the families affected.

    Take care, dear Chaya!

    All my love,
    E.L.
