I stole this....
Tue Apr 24 2007

I didn't exactly steal it. A friend sent it to me, and I thought it would be fun to tease my DD readers.  So, here's the quiz.  These are not trick questions. They are straight questions with straight answers.  Marian, you may not participate. You already got these when we were IMing yesterday

1.  Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2.  What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

3.  Of all the vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons.  All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the two perennial vegetables?

4.  What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5.  In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle.  The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way.  How did the pear get inside the bottle?  [My question: how do you get the pear out?]

6.  Only three words in standard English begin with the letters"dw" and they are all common words.  Name two of them.  [All three if you want to]

7.  There are 14 punctuation makes in English grammar.  Can you name at least half of them?

8.  Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9.  Name six or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter "S."

Answers tomorrow.  Just to give you time to think and get 100%.

Shalom

So far the 'dw' has me stumped . . . putting on my thinking cap! I can think of a slang word . . .

    1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

    I have no idea.

    2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

Is it the "Westward Ho" statue? It faces west, but the earth rotates to the east.

    3. Of all the vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the two perennial vegetables?

    Artichokes and asparagus.

    4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

    Strawberries

    5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle? [My question: how do you get the pear out?]

They tie the bottle to the branch around the pear when it is small enough to fit through the neck. The pear then grows inside the bottle. They do the same thing with lemons. [To get it out, you cut it up with a long, thin knife.]

    6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters"dw" and they are all common words. Name two of them. [All three if you want to]

    Dwarf, dwell, dwindle.

    7. There are 14 punctuation makes [sic] in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

Period, comma, colon, semicolon, question mark, exclaimation point, apostrophe, quotation marks, parenthesis, asterisk, dash, slash/stroke, ellipsis...

    8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

    Lettuce

    9. Name six or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter "S."

Socks, slippers, shoes, sandals, sneakers, stilleto heels.

(I hope I wasn't supposed to make my response private.)

Thank you, 404error! Now I don't have to strain my brain. I got a few correct and a few partly correct before reading all the comments. Those were really interesting and I'm looking forward to the answer to #1.
