Sign Language
Sun Dec 20 2009

I found a place here on the computer where I can re-learn sign language. Well, maybe not too well conversationally, but bits and pieces, maybe. I'm planning to spend some time every day at the site. Relearning very basic signs to start with, then progressing to more detailed signing. I have the site bookmarked now, so I can poke one key and have my tutorial in front of me.

Why? Oh, just because. I need something more than solitaire and jigsaw puzzles to keep my mind busy. Yes, I do a lot of reading, too. But. . .

I took a class many years ago, and have forgotten 99.9% of it. Or maybe 99.99%. However, I think I need to find a deaf person, or a group, to associate with if the time spent learning is going to be worth more than just because. And it's adding some discipline to my life.

Bless

YAY for learning new things, or at least refreshing old forgotten ones!

RYC: sun burn seems to be the biggest issue for most people when they change climate, from those who don;t realise you can get burnt in the snow to the various people from the US or Europe who refused to accept they could get burnt in New Zealand because it didn't get anywhere near as hot as it did where they were from. Never mind the fact NZ is right under the hole in the ozone layer and doesnt have as much protective smog and polution. More than a few tourists/newcomers end up in hospital with sunburn. Leanring to bodysurf however would be well worth a LITTLE discomfort!

RYC: the short answer to all the hospital stuff is I have an auto imune condition and a blood anomoly which have caused many other complications over the years. Having recently moved to Australia from NZ I am having to start over with the hospital system here. OODLES of fun!

Well done, Chaya! I've always felt that the act of learning sign language itself is a compassionate one, as it shows one's desire to reach out and communicate with a disadvantaged and largely excluded section of our society. Of course, when the opportunity arises, being able to assist someone who communicates in sign language is even better. Mastering international sign language is definitely on my bucket list.
