Naming
Sat Aug 08 2009

Among some cultures it is a custom to take a give a different name to babies when it seems the Angel of Death is taking newborns and very young children. David becomes Roy so that if the Angel is looking for David, it finds Roy and passes on.  Likewise, a name change may be taken in thanksgiving for having survived danger, a serious illness, or a large change  in life's circumstances.

I am now known as Yona Chaya in thanksgiving for restored health. Rabbi named me in Shacharit (Morning Service) today.

Yes, I'm feeling good, but I do have to remind myself not to squander my energy. Because I feel so good in the morning, I've tended to take on a project that could be finished over two or three days, but I want to get it done Today!

One thing, though, I've put of tackling is the repotting of a rather large jade plant. It got too big for the pot, and it started leaning over. It's now leaning over the other way, because I tilted the pot. I need to get some sturdy stakes to support the plant in a much larger pot. OK, so get me to the hardware store and get the stakes. The poor plant is going to die when it's roots become exposed, and I fear that will happen most any time now.

OK, that's a project that needs to be completed all at one time. But redecorating the patio should be an on-going thing. Right.

When went on-line to check out composting, I found that shredded newspapers are good. Now I know what to do with a few sheets of newspaper. And while I'm busy shredding newspaper, I could also sit here and shred old bank statements, receipts, and other paper that never should have been kept in the first place.  What a bore!!

I bought two discounted DVDs of movies I particularly enjoyed: When Harry Met Sally and Dances with Wolves. I'll watch those on Monday night when there's nothing on TV that I want to watch. I'll be glad when the new season starts. Couple of interesting new shows scheduled.

Wonder why Medium switched from NBC to CBS. Looks like The Unit won't be back. I'm sorry it's gone. Action and tension made a good show. Ah well.

I think I'll go play some solitaire, then go to bed.

Bless

So do you plan to use this new name outside of the shul? If so, it may take me a while to adjust.

If you get your new pot and potting mix Kendall and I will re-pot your plant for you when we come down. That sort of thing never takes much time, just a reasonable amount of care and lots of brawn. Remember to get more potting mix than you think you will need. It always takes more than it seems like it will, and any overage can be used for other plants, or returned if necessary.

    Yona Chaya.
    Lovely.
We are all thankful you are better.
It is so hard to slow down when you have been laid up for so long. I pray you will though.
    Enjoy your day.

Congratulations on the new name, Chaya! The Chinese do it too, and go one step further. If a child is sickly, they might have a temple ceremony to have the child 'adopted' by a godmother, usually an aunt or close family friend. Henceforth, the child calls the foster parent 'mother'/'father' and his biological parents 'aunt' & 'uncle'. If a child is exceptionally beautiful or gifted, there is a belief that jealous spirits may wish him/her harm, so the parents normally give him/her a pejorative 'ugly' name, e.g. "Little Pig", "Little Cow", "Silly Thing", "Ugly Mug", "Naughty Monkey", in order to fool the spirits.

I wish you had more help with things around the house. As for composting, the dry waste (shredded paper, woody yard waste etc) should always be mixed with wet/kitchen waste in equal proportions, or you won't be getting compost out of your shreddies -- just too dry and lacking in nutrients.

    Much love.
