greatest of all time

this is what maurice greene was calling himself.

so goes the arrogance laced with a little disrespect. gaitlin and crawford were no better in the 100m semis. did anyone clue these guys that they are running in the Olympics? in front of the world? i rooted for the Jamaican sprinter who seemed gracious and showed humility.

i rooted for all of the women in the marathon. no boasting. no showboating. just a very grateful and totally inspiring Deena Kastor taking her last lap in tears while waving to the crowd. she took the bronze. Mizuki Noguchi took the gold. she simply rocked! Catherine Ndereba took the silver. all of them showed class.

seems sportsmanship has left sports. but then again, why am i surprised? we live in a society where the "Me" show is always running on a loop. drivers cut off other drivers, shoppers fight over the last item that's 50% off...students complain about the noise level while simultaneously yacking on their cellphones...

sure not everyone is like this. it's just getting a little bit more difficult finding the decent folk. the true athletic champions for everyone to look up to...
Kastor

the Swedish high jumper Stefan Holm...i rooted for him too. he caught the Gold and headed straight to his dad. that's class. noone expected him to win, which makes it all the more greater!

running the 15 miler this weekend was awesome. i timed eating and drinking perfectly. i'm beginning to really get a grip on when my body needs to drink or eat and that's usually around the 7 and 1/2 mile mark. i usually will drink and eat something at least 30 to 50 minutes before i go for my run. my legs felt pretty good almost the entire time and my breathing fell into rhythm most of the way. still have to work on relaxing my shoulders, they tense up without my knowing it. more upperbody weight training should help with this. the 3 miler on sunday started out a little slow but picked up during the last mile. it's getting to be that the first 4-6 miles are hell and once i get past them, i'll be alright. the course i run has tough hills, more than i care to run up, but if the nyc course is mostly flat, i'll be in good shape...heck, even a few hills won't kill me too much since my muscles will be used to the work and just change gear accordingly. all in all, long runs are beginning to be fun and i never really expected that. the fun of it really is seeing my progress. it's cool to get through something you've never done before and do it without totally bonking. shows i'm getting stronger and that my training is beginning to pay off.
eventually, i'll have to run a 20 miler (3x) doesn't seem as daunting as it would have before saturday's run.
