Bottle Gentian

I found this about six feet off of the trail in the back of the preserve I've been going to. I'd never seen it before, and from what I gather, it isn't common to our area. This is as open as the flower will get, hence the name "bottle gentian". A small bee or other pollinating insect will have to worm its way through the tiny hole at the top of the tube to get down to the nectar and pollen. I just hope the bugs around here know more about bottle gentian than I did; I'd love to see this produce more plants.

The most exciting wild flower I ever ran across was a gentian that was growing right next to the outflow creek of a mountain lake. I was on a field trip with the native plant society. I had seen a lot of wild flowers up to that point in my life, but that was my first gentian. They are pretty scarce. I love them!
    Yours is a pretty one.

That's very pretty. The way it's shaped makes it looks almost tropical.

It's lovely. I wonder if this plant would be hard to cultivate in a home setting.
