Hitting the Event Horizon

So we’re into the next phase of transition. I think, as a working title, I will call this phase the “I’m flat broke with no more unemployment benefits and totally dependent upon the good will of others” stage of my life. I expect this to be neither comfortable nor pretty.

There are no large animal welfare positions in my geographic area. There are no QA/TS openings in my geographical area that would call upon my veterinary/industrial experience (hence, making me uniquely not-qualified for any job openings in my region). I have applied for animal caretaker positions, for QA/TS positions in a lab or hospital setting, for biologic technical writing jobs, for animal shelter administrative positions, and for goddamned pet store jobs. No one has even had the decency to say they don’t want me. Then again, why bother? Silence says it just as well, and with far less effort.

Meanwhile, I’m having my initial experience with the whole “why the poor stay poor” phenomenon of our society. For the first time my checking account dipped under $100 for a small period of time last month, and I got slapped with a $15.00 maintenance fee. Just great – I get hit with a bill because I don’t have enough money.

I am not in a good frame of mind.

    That $15 bank charge is just one of the ways that the world sticks it to the poor. The grocery store does it by pricing huge packages of everything cheaper by the unit. Utilities and finance companies do it with their late fees and disconnection/reconnection fees. There are a thousand other ways I just can't think of now, but taking advantage of the poor is corporate America's favorite blood sport.
