I returned from lunch to the message light blinking on the phone on my desk. The transplant coordinator from the Big City Hospital had called to let me know that my MELD was at 18. In her words, she says that we have to get me "a little bit sicker". In other words, we need to get me one more point from somewhere. She suggested I talk to my doctor about anticoagulants or other medications that would give me that extra point.
Unfortunately, I'm already on the anticoagulants, and we dare not increase the dosage any further. I already walk around with perpetual nosebleeds, and a papercut will continue to bleed forever when I get one. I'm not sure what other methods are available to increase my MELD, but Dr. Liver will definitely be asked about this when I go for my next paracentesis on Monday.
Ironic ... I have to get sicker in order to qualify for getting well.
