It's too hot to do anything except occasionally rotate to present the other side to the fan. Philadelphia peaked at 102°F (38.9°C) this afternoon. It's just after 6:00 now, and 101° in the city.

I put a 9"X13" pan of water out in the garden with ice in it in the shade this afternoon for the birds. I suspect neither bird nor beast spotted it, but the water is gone except for a teaspoon or so in the low end. Still no activity at the nest, but I haven't been watching it for more than ten minutes or so at a time.

When it gets closer to dusk I'll camp out on the deck and watch for as long as I can. Weatherunderground says it'll be going down to the low 70's tonight, so I'm hoping the deck will be tolerable for a bit.

They claim it isn't the heat, it's the humidity. Whoever "they" are, they are idiots. Today's humidity was 62%. So far as I'm concerned, I'll take 62°F at 102% humidity over 102°F and 62% humidity any time.

    For us, those are common temps. But I KNOW what it means for you back there.

    Yep, that's hot. Meanwhile, we've been having relatively cool (low 90s), rainy weather for the past couple of weeks. I guess every now and then someone else gets the hotties besides us.

    Do you have A/C?

    RYC: Yep, growing up I had Herburt Aloiscious and Prunella, both abyssinians. Like yours they went nuts when the fridge was opened and made the cutest little purr-like trill when they were being held. Izzy hasn't been very vocal and she's still a little freaked out about being handled but she's getting better.

    I love humming birds and other birds enjoy their bird perches and feeders. My grandparents used to have a humming bird feeder up north where we had a cottage and the birds were awesome to watch. We also used to feed raccoons our table leftovers and scraps and watch them after dark. Humming birds are fun to watch because they are so speedy and full of life. I hope you enjoy your humming birds once they come.
