As for ICQ and MSN IM - I've used both without much trouble, but my favorite is Yahoo IM because you can set it to log you in under "invisible" mode. So nobody knows you're on unless you tell them.

I ignored your warning and read everything anyway. I think you may have answered a mystery for me...one of the laptops in the office will not find the dsl connection if you turn outlook on first. If you establish an internet connection first - it works fine. I have gone through the settings dozens of times and cannot figure it out!!!! I have taken this problem to be a personal insult to my computer intelligence and have been frustrated that I can't figure it out...now I know I'm not alone.

You can't be "invisible" on AIM like you can be on MSN and ICQ, but you can block the people from your list that you don't want to see you online. There's also an option of "block everybody who's not on my buddy list" and "block everybody".

I've been on ICQ since it's beginning and I love it. It's never given me a problem. The spam is a recent occurance though, which is terribly sad. I use MSN Messenger and AIM and Yahoo! Messenger on occasion. Yes, their all 4 installed and all 4 work and run happily together :P Yahoo I think is the most user friendly messenger service and has the nicest interface. AIM is next but has periods of outages where random people can't log in. Plus...well, just the fact that it's AOL give me the creeps.

There's nothing wrong with being opinionated at all :) Everyone is, to an extent. Except some people have the guts to stand up and say it, while others just keep it to themselves.
Over time, I have collected a collection of instant messengers on this machine! Need one to talk to one person, another to talk to someone else! Talk about confusing. Sorry you had so many problems with MSN and ICQ (I agree, ICQ is evil!) but glad you got one you're happy with now :)

Right clicking on the AIM icon in your system tray (by the clock) lets you disconnect AIM so you can surf uninterrupted. But you already knew that by now, I'm sure. I didn't read the other comments yet.

I have read alot of nightmare stories like yours regarding ICQ. We have ICQ, MSN an AOL IM. They all seem to run fine at the same time. My daugther yaks on all three simultaneously. My favorite is ICQ because I can be invisible and just observe who is online if I am trying to work. I like the invisible feature, you can be "at the party" and sit in the corner and no one knows. I have the same problem with MSN, it is sneaky about turning itself on, and you can't log on invisible.
