Oscar Night, new shoes, and more.
Mon Mar 25 2002

Last night I did something I've never before done in my life - I watched an awards ceremony on television in its entirety. If someone can tell me why, I'd love to find out.

I'll admit, I was curious to see how "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" would fare. I didn't expect them to take home best director or picture (although I wouldn't have complained if it had won), but I was gratified that Howard Shore won for best score. Cirque de Soleil was quite possibly the highlight of the event; I should have quit while I was ahead and gone to bed after Cirque had finished their performance.

And yes, Allimom - I did see Hugh Jackman on television. And yes, he is quite a hunk, isn't he?

The Professor has an interview for a full time, tenure track position at a local college next week. It sounds very promising, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. I just need to find a polite way to con him into buying a pair of dress shoes, now. Adolescent Cat from Hell has pretty much destroyed his current pair. Don't ask. Maybe this time I can talk him into sinking a reasonable amount of money into a pair, so that they actually fit him!

Finally - to trebora. I've been careful to keep the exact nature of my job out of my open entries on this journal. I've a couple of reasons for this. One is simply confidentiality considerations. If I avoid mentioning my specific job, then I don't have to worry about accidentally mentioning something that I shouldn't be talking about. Another reason is, as petty as this sounds, I've seen some of the bickerings on this site erupt into open warfare. There have been threats by some parties to contact another person's school or place of business. I'm not willing to risk someone deciding to make me target of the day. Finally, I really don't want to have to get into any ethics debates with animal-rights people or agricultural people or scientifically oriented people over different aspects of my responsibilities. The subject is far too volatile, and that discussion is not what this diary is about.

For what it's worth, my job does have me working directly with animals, though, and I have a lot of contact with the government, though I do not work for them. If you want a category for my job, stick me into "Public Health, Private Industry" and you won't be far off. Sorry to be so cryptic about it.

When I first came online I used my middle name, Suzanne, because I was afraid. I am not sure what I was afraid of. Then I got comfortable and was just myself. And I pretty much tell all. I had wondered if you were afraid or uncomfortable,,,,,you answered that for me.

I too watched the awards, something I NEVER do. I haven't even seen any of the movies, but then I haven't gone to the movies in years. It was worth it to see Halle Berry win and give her speech. I am not a big fan, so can't say whether or not it was deserving, but it was very moving.

Hugh was why you watched the Oscars. Could there have been any other reason? Your inner self yearned to view his hunkiness and sent a subliminal message to your hand controlling the remote control to set your TV to view the Oscars.
    That must be why.

I figured "volatility" was why you hadn't gotten into specifics about your job. Although I suspect we're on "opposite" sides of the fence, I haven't gotten into the specifics of my former job for the same reasons: that's not what my diary is about, and the subject is way too volatile.

Regardless of any differences, I appreciate our commonalities, and I'm glad to have "met" you!

Ahh, Cirque du Soleil - amazing stuff.
I've seen them live - do it too sometime if you can.
I saw LOTR on Sunday afternoon. Incredible.
I saw ABM the week before and I'm going again tonight with J.
    A surfeit of riches!
Hugh Jackman a hunk??? Nahhhhh - he's just another average Aussie *raises eyebrows*
