You Know You Are Old When...
Wed Feb 11 2009

When you prefer not to disclose the age of your child...
We often perceive ourselves in relation to something…or someone. How often do we think of us as children of our parents, parents of our kids, friends, relatives, teachers or even sysadmins…sometimes it feels like I’m loosing my identity within all these folds of me…yet in fact it IS my identity…without being somebody for someone, I might’ve never succeeded in being me. Anyway, today I woke up to the birthday. Not mine, mind you, my son’s. I think some times how strange it is that on my own birthday I don’t seem to get that “age” feeling, but when it is the Kid, it all hits me suddenly like gee, I am THAT old already?!!! It is true as they say: you know your old when you stop buying toys for your kid’s birthdays…and I haven’t bought a toy for quite a while now…my Kid is 24 today…
Happy Birthday, sweetie! Have a great life ahead of you and I won’t say “at your age I have already…” because what you will have will be so much more and that is my wish for you.
“small print” wish: whatever you do, please remember – I am not ready to add the grandma title to my name yet ;-)

Happy birthday to 'the Kid'! I know what you mean. . . I don't like to think of my age as a number because the number to me seems so OLD! Have a wonderful day.

I know exactly what you mean - my birthday never evoked feelings of angst (ok, 36 did but 40 didn't, go figure). My daughter hit 16 and then recently 18 and I had a huge moment of realization that almost sent me for a loop. SHE IS GROWING UP AND GROWN UP (relatively). My son hit 15 and "crap, MORE driving???". I can only imagine how graduation in May will affect me. Not only that, I don't FEEL old enough to have children that age, I may look it but feel it? Not at all.

I am thrilled for both of them and excited to see what is going on with them. But each milestone they reach makes me realize that they are milestones that take them away from me. Necessary things that remind me that they love me but won't need me like they used to need me. GAH!! LOL!!

Happy Birthday to your Kid. May he know how much his mama loves him. :)

I know what you mean about the kid's birthday. I can't be old enough to have a kid that old. No no no!!! Then I look in the mirror.

The end of the fabricated story was: We passed on the candlelit dinner. (With raised eyebrows)
