Opposites Attract. But Similarities Attract Better
Thu May 11 2006

What do we have within us that others don’t have? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Why would anyone want a piece of us? I’m talking not of chopped of limbs or ears, but about something of our mind or soul or whatever substance we posses in unsubstantial form… I’m talking of the reasons why every now and then we meet those who are interested, who keen to know more then we show, who express more then just polite interest…

Sometimes I’m wondering why with some we speak same language and breathe same air and have same perceptions, yet it is mostly with them we more likely to grow a wish to speak more, to breathe deeper and to share more ideas…you can argue that opposites attract…yet they do just that. Attract one to another. As in curiosity that we all know what she’s done with the cat…;-)

I’m not sure where such way of thinking will bring me in the end, but I have suspicious that although opposites attract tremendously, the similar minds are capable to bond more stronger…which is in it’s way rather illogical, isn’t it? For we do learn from what we don’t know and we should be more drawn by the differences, not similarities…oh well…I can feel how my thoughts begin to curl into a circle…the one with no beginning and no end, you know…when whatever further I’d think, I will come back to where my thought started in the first place…time to go home, methinks…

On the get-a-life side of things, I have a statement to make and it’s a serious one too: You know how sometimes we say: “I don’t know what do I want”? Well, I think, it’s easier to approach this from another end: discover what you don’t want instead! And I know for sure now, that I don’t want to be a manager. Ever. This kind of job just sucks! (not that I’ve been offered one, mind you, just have to attend millions of meetings recently and now have a callus on my butt and a strong view on management in general)

Especially in the context of love, I think opposites attract because love is such a powerful state of being that when we are in it we let our boundaries down. Thus, being in love with an "opposite" allows us to extend ourselves beyond our usual comfort zone for long enough that we can make lasting changes in our lives. I don't think we are attracted to someone who is truly opposite to us, just someone who has qualities that we need, qualities or attributes currently outside our comfort zone.

I think similarities have a better long-lasting potential for a relationship. But then again, if one has really changed due to the whole opposites-attract thingy I postulated above, wouldn't the relationship just change from attraction of opposites to attraction of similarities?

Aw man, you'd think after all these years I'd know how to leave a comment by now... most of my comment got deleted in the editting window without my noticing!!! What I meant to say in addition to the above, is that your second paragraph is beautifully stated and I also wrote something very profound and wise about opposites attracting... really, it WAS profound. You'll have to take my word on it. ;)

To the President of the Hungry Women's Club:

Ok so I feel a little less alone in the world knowing that I'm not the only one starving around here. What kinda crazy monkey diet are you on anyways? Sounds much more interesting than mine! I'll trade you some tuna and salad greens for some African fruit! Of course by the time you receive it the tuna might be a little funky and the greens may have turned into salad "browns"... although I tell ya, they can't possibly taste any worse!
