Of Chances Given, Taken
Thu Feb 05 2009

We often get involved in living so much, we forget to notice little wonders we’re granted every now and then. They might even become an annoyance as they break our mundane routine and gosh, don’t we all hate it when what we are used to do on a daily basis, we can do no more…

So England never spoilt by snowfall. And when it does snow, the whole country goes like aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!...and comes to a holt. Silly, innit? Particular silly that by the midday the snow would normally melt away and everything will be back to the grey-ish normality. So what’s with the panic?

I woke up to the white fairy tale outside my window and went like ahhhh…magical! Turned on the radio and there they were going aggrrrhhhhh! Chaos on the roads, schools closed, everything is bad bad bad, we’re doomed…rrrrrright…did anyone actually looked out of the window and notice the pristine beauty?!..we become so detached from the place we exist, it amazes me…yes, it is snow, yes, the roads can be blocked and yes there might be all sorts of things happening around that are not part of everyday’s routine…isn’t it wonderful?! Where is the sense of exciting adventure, the anticipation of something unusual going on, where is the understanding of the fleeting nature of the chance you’ve been given here on the island that knows no real winter we finally get a peek at what we are missing…humans can be so detached from nature sometimes…and we are scared of unfamiliar…we don’t know how it is to drive in snow, so instead of trying, we will stay prisoners in our homes and never see how magical the land looks in her white bridal dress…gee…I had to laugh this morning – I’ve got to work in time lesser then usual – the roads were empty and clear, since all the chickens stayed at home …the guy lives on my street who has 4wheels, he works from home today…those who like me made it to the office, we had fun…we enjoyed every minute of the wonder given to us by the kindness of the nature…we just went outside and built a snowman…and a snowwoman…and a snowkitten…and even a disabled snowperson – we do care of disable customers at our place, you know…and it was worth every second of laugh, of the snowballs throwing, of the snowangels making, of pushing your boss into the snowpile and being buried under the snowfall in return…it was worth every moment of joy to make an effort to share it…sometimes it does surprise me so much how engrossed we are into the processes we accustomed to, the rules and routines we set up for ourselves so that we can go on living without giving much thought to it, like robots...we choose to stay safe within our limits we set up for ourselves instead of risking it for the sake of doubtful pleasure, we don't even know if we would like it or not yet we would not try…a comfortable narrowmindness...and when a chance given to us to taste something new, unusual, we cut it down to the measure of how much effort it will cost us to try…and in the end we will just let it pass…we do miss chances for can’t-be-bothered reasons…pity really…

I thought of you when I heard of your freak weather... and heard your mayor saying that this kind of thing happens *every morning* in Canada... oh if only that were true!

Love the snow people... and a snow kitten! Livie will be so jealous!

Snow must be so enjoyable when you don't have it all the time.

I love the snow people and the snow kitten!

I'm quite jealous of all your snow. It occasionally snows here but not very often and it's looking increasingly unlikely that it will snow much at all this winter. I'm so disappointed. I've only seen snow a few times in my life and I think it's great!

I used to wake my three sons up in the middle of the night to show them it was snowing outside. ;-)

And my best friend and I would often walk in the evening when it snowed.

I live where it virtually never snows now. I miss it so much.... sigh.

I think that the chaos comes from the fact that people just are not used to snow and communting in it. I love it, if I can stay home, and watch it snowing out my window and maybe go sledding. We had a weeks worth of snow over the Christmas Holiday. I hated that I couldn't stay home and enjoy it, but rather had to drive in it or take the bus. You are right though, it is beautiful.
