Oia
Fri Oct 26 2007

We spent one night on Santorini. And we spent it in Oia. Greeks pronounce it as Ei-Ia, actually, but Oia it is written on the signs and in the guidebooks. Oia is a little town with white-washed houses, located at the very northern edge of the island. I choose this place to stay because it is less commercialised then Fira, the capital. And because it is a paradise for artistic souls with all her shops which are in fact art galleries, with Oia’s streets that take your mind away from your worlds and lure it into the endless white maze of tranquillity…

Oia's streets

and infamous Santorini's sunsets…an unforgettable magical experience, when the sun splashes gold onto the whiteness of Oia’s buildings in farewell gesture, as if waving magic wand upon this fairy tale place…actually, the popular opinion is that sunsets in Oia are way overrated and that hundreds of tourists coming to Oia just for the sunset spoil the magic of a moment. I have to admit: even that we were there out of season, there were still quite a lot of tourists gathered on the west end of the town in a popular sunsetting ritual...however that didn't dissapoint me - we just walked away from the "best seats" and watched the sunset from slightly far away  - it was still enchanting enough. But I have to agree with the general opinion - the setting of a sun by itself is a magical performance, it doesn't matter really where you happenned to witness it.  I think Santorini's Sunset are invention of  tourists agencies.

all these houses are white-washed and the setting sun colors them in gold - unbelivable!

Even if I'd wish to find a less then perfect thing in Oia, I would’ve been at loss. It is a place where every breath you take in, spreads a sense of peace deep into the every cell of your body…and if you want to find the perfect destination to get away, I don’t know more romantic place then Santorini. It feels there as if it is made from a blue Mediterranean dream itself…or maybe it was?..

i don't think any words needed here

I have some more pictures left still - watch this space

infamous...sunsets? Surely a typo. Maybe romanticized, but hardly infamous.

Sunsets are so variable as to be indefinable. We have some pretty nice ones here, and some are ho-hum.

I must say, though, that Oia is a pretty place.

    Bless

I'm getting a little vertigo just looking at those pictures!
I am a bit afraid of heights you see....

But it does seem like a very unique place, no doubt.

Oh, my dear, my heart is breaking for you.

You eliminated "comments" from your last entry because you ... I don't know...because you don't want sympathy? I don't know. But I just have to tell you how sorry I am to hear about the breakup of your marriage. I have tears.

    You are in my heart.

You're making it difficult to leave comments, and I'm going to leave comments, so you may as well put that icon back at the bottom of your diary. Hear me!?

My husband taught me to do some minor repair work around the house. Then when I did do a little bit of the thing he taught me to do, he ask "Honey, why didn't you ask me to do that?"

Because.... You taught me how to do it, and I already asked you THREE times??? Hmmm?

    ;-)

So revel in your new-found skills.
