Actually, I know no Seans. It’s just a funny language that English is. Why in Sean “S” says like “Sh”? And why in ocean the same “sh” spells like “c”?! Anyways, this was not about Seans or funny phonetics. This was supposed to be about Ocean.
I had one more dream to make happened on my list of journey’s dreams. And perhaps those who blessed with the views of an Ocean in the frame of their kitchen’s window won’t understand my excitement. I have seen a lot of waters. Lakes, rivers, seas and swamps. But I’ve never seen an ocean. And to those sceptics that would be tempted to say that oceans are like seas or swamps, I don’t believe you. I’ve seen it for myself now and it was so totally different! I had so many dreams came true this autumn, it was almost unreal. So I’ve decided to take a last gamble with my luck and go see the ocean. Gamble is a good word to say about my adventure in general and adventure of my last day in particular. I’ve checked out from my hotel early morning and had the whole day to wander as my return flight was late eve. I’ve figured it out that if the place has word Atlantic in its name, chances are, it is somewhere close to the Atlantic Ocean. (Nah, I did check it with the map to be sure). So it was my last day in States and once again I found myself on a Greyhound bus this time heading to the Atlantic City.
When I had a conversation with my fellow passenger on the bus about where we’re going, I amused him to laughs when stated that I’m going to Atlantic City “to wander around” he even responded with “why bothered?!” I don’t think he actually knew that there is an Ocean in Atlantic City, not just the Casinos…Anyway, casinos are not the places where I like to take my chances, so I went t o Atlantic City just to see the ocean. (try and tell me there’s something wrong with it!)
I like small towns. People there seem to be more alive and somehow more opened. I walked from the bus station to the boardwalk together with some local lady (I asked for directions and she kindly suggested to join her as she was heading the same way) while we walked, I’ve learned about life in Atlantic City being not the same as it used to be, about house prices and local government scheme of housing benefits…I’ve learned some very personal things about life of a casino’s service staff.
Anyways. First thing I saw in Atlantic City before even seeing the ocean, was a Korean War memorial. I thought it was touchy and very thoughtful. And then I saw Him. The Ocean. Now I’m gonna be all mellow and slobbery for the next few paragraphs, so you may skip them if you don’t find ocean to be anything of the significance.
The Ocean amazed me. I had of course pictured him in my imagination, but he was nowhere near that image. Once again, like with everything not made by humans, there are no human words to describe it. But of course there are plenty of emotions. He was like a song. He sung a song…a whispered melody of the tides…a soothing music of never-ending changes…well, you know what I’m talking about…
I was so blessed with the weather on the whole of my trip, I couldn’t believe my luck. On the 5th of November the Atlantic City’s ocean was unbelievably blue and unbelievably warm. It was not a tourist season so the beach was empty and apart from few lonely walkers, it was pretty much just The Ocean and Me. I’ve spent 2 hours walking along the beach, just walking, watching waves, birds, tracing my own footsteps in the sand…it was so warm that I was tempted to take off my shoes and walk in the waters of Atlantics and let him lick my toes with his playful gentle waves…what more could I wish for?!
I did take pictures, but I found no pictures that would keep the wonder. Well, at least they do preserve the views. That was the perfect ending to my perfect journey. So almost perfect that sometimes I question myself did it really happened…
Last more to come…
