I've been distracted and didn't finish my entry about "earth day". Let's start with the good.
A robin is building a nest in the cedar tree behind the house. My first instinct was to take it down. Only because I have a history with robins. At honey's, every spring some robin would start attacking itself in the glass windows at the crack of dawn. I'd cover the window, it would move to a different window. One year, I had every main floor window covered. And they would build nests in the crevasses of the house. I'd knock the nest down in the morning, it would be there again in the evening. Over and over we went until I finally came up with the idea of putting up bird net over those crevasses. And the one year I got there too late and they had babies, they would dive bomb me every time I walked past. So I'm not a fan of the bird. I told honey about the nest and he said, "But it is in a tree! You have to leave it." And that's when I realized my robin triggers had been activated and I was being unreasonable. Of course the nest can stay, especially since I can see inside it from my bathroom window if Mrs. Robin chooses to use it. So there's that...
And on the actual Earth Day, adults led a class of 2nd or 3rd grade students from the nearby school to what I assume was the park by the lake. Each student had a plastic grocery bag and I assume the intent was to pick up litter (although there was a park cleanup the weekend preceding so I can't imagine there was much to pick up.) I love that they're teaching the kids early on that they can help keep the world clean. But they returned to school empty handed. I can only assume all 30 plastic grocery bags were thrown in the trash bin with only a few pieces of litter in each one. The intent was a good one, but the end result was not. The litter could have been combined into 1 or 2 bags to throw in the trash and the remaining bags recycled. But instead of 2 bags in the trash, 30 plastic bags entered into the landfill. Sigh.
And the other morning when I awoke, I noticed the neighbor across the street had his truck in the driveway, lights on and running. I was reading and when I looked up 10 minutes later, the truck was still parked and running! I was kind of worried that maybe something happened to him??? But I went back to reading. And 15 minutes later I see some movement and another truck pulled up, the driver got out and climbed into neighbor's truck and off they went. So neighbor idled at least 25 minutes in his driveway! (Probably longer because it was idling before I got up). How can people complain about the cost of gasoline and then waste so much gas idling for a half hour while polluting the air?
And it just makes me wonder, have people not learned anything over the last 40+ years, even with all the news and the ads and the discussion? Or is it just not in their algorithm? Or they just don't read? Or is it that they just don't care?? I just can't fathom not caring for the earth. I just cannot.
