Smoke

The smoke from the Boundary Waters fire moved in during dinnertime yesterday and it is super dense, by far the worst I've ever experienced. I say this because when I step outside it smells like I stuck my head into a pile of wet ashes. We've had smoke before, but never an odor as strong as this. We are currently in the worst level/most hazardous level according to the fire/smoke map

The temps remain in the mid-90s. The humidity is still very high. Needless to say, there was no walk this morning and no bike ride last evening. The smell is seeping into my house this morning. I wish I had an air purifier.

Smoke pics from yesterday at 7pm, when we were 'only' in the purple smoke range, not extreme range:

Looking across the street (and at my neighbor's dead tree)
The smoke reminds me of one of the saddest things I've heard related to smoke/climate change. It happened 4 years ago at grandson's birthday party. One of his little cousins pointed at the white sun obscured by smoke and said "Look, the moon!" Our poor children. Our poor, poor children. Surely we can do better for them? Smoke should not be normal. But it is now a regular part of summer.

I imagine these fires will affect our vacation in the UP in two weeks as well. Last time we were there 3 yrs ago, it was smoky too, and really put a damper on enjoying the scenic overlooks. Because you couldn't see anything.

It was so humid yesterday that we had a tiny rain shower that formed right overhead before the smoke moved in. And by tiny, I mean it was a 3-mi spot of rain showing up on radar and nothing else in the entire state.

I think I'm going to give up on the celery I planted. It seems to require a lot of water, which would make sense given it is made up of mostly water. I just don’t like having to water it everyday and use up the rain barrel water for it.

I have today and Friday off. Today I go to the dentist for some fillings on my chipped lower front teeth to preserve the enamel that remains. No big deal, no novacaine. Then I may go to honey's and get my wagon since I will be halfway there already. That will help my elbow, so I can put the watering can in the wagon and don't have to lug the water can from the backyard rain barrel to the front yard. I have been wearing a tennis elbow band all day for two days, and I feel some improvement in my elbow.

Friendliness is contagious. I think everyone should catch it.

My sympathies about the smoke. We have had many fires in the last several years where it looked like that for over two months. So far this year, thank God, we have been spared. I hope yours clears up soon.
