It snowed last night. WTF?
Sure, it was a only dusting but the rooftops are white. Prince's "Sometimes It Snows In April" captures the melancholy of this event. Saturday was nasty, weather wise. Really strong winds and the temp only got up to mid-40s. This morning it was 32. Remember when it was 80 on Thursday? Me neither.
Honey fine-tuned my bike. He got the brakes adjusted better and showed me what I couldn't figure out. And...he caught that I had put the bolt on the front tire on backwards (who knew there was a right and wrong way?) so that should resolve that small issue I was having with the front tire.
A tom turkey has been hanging out on our street this week.
I don't know that I am happy about it. I've seen flocks of wild turkeys in other neighborhoods and they are pretty stubborn. And my ex was chased by one when he was on a walk and got too close many years ago. I'd prefer they take up residence somewhere else. That said, they are quite beautiful birds. Yesterday morning the tom was across the street, calling out and displaying his full spread of feathers. No female around though so he moved on.
Went down to honey's yesterday to pick up any remaining food because he is not eating it unless I prepare it. It is just so disappointing to go to his house, because I spent so much time taking care of and rejuvenating the property inside and out when I lived there for 10 years, and in two years it has gone to hell. He did a half-ass job with the leaves last fall, he hasn't picked up a single fallen branch. There is half a tree laying on the ground right out the kitchen window that has been there since September. Inside, there are dust bunnies on the floors and toaster crumbs everywhere in the kitchen. It just stresses me out. That's why I quit going every weekend.Instead of taking care of his property, he is spending his time rewiring the pole barn he rarely uses.
While I was there, I cut back the asparagus from last year and saw new sprouts coming in already. Yay! But that plant is not producing like it used to. I raked out the strawberries too. No growth yet on the raspberries or grapes. When I was done, we went to the nursery to see how much they were charging for nannyberry vs serviceberry. My plan is to plant asparagus here in a raised bed (to keep dog from doing his business on it) and plant a nannyberry. I just want to get rid of all the hard to mow areas and put things I enjoy there instead, things that don't require a lot of work. Anyway, I had already bought the asparagus crowns and they should be planted like NOW, so I googled whether asparagus can be grown in a pot, and it can, so I planted the crowns in the large half-barrel pot for this year and will transplant them to a raised bed once they are dormant in the fall. That will give me all summer to work on the raised bed.
And I got all the garden art and the bird bath out of storage and out in the yard. Bought the materials for the raised bed because it is on sale this week. Now, I need to start killing the grass/creeping charlie and then rototilling the area since it is so compacted, and then leveling the ground. I can get free dirt from the city to fill in the bed when I am ready.
