Today's update adds a new Notification icon to the menu - top right on desktop and replacing the 'Settings' icon in the mobile menu bar. I chose to replace the Settings icon since you can already access your Diary Settings by clicking on Jasper (the pencil icon in the middle).
This update is a first step toward more interactive notifications at DD. New entries on this diary will generate a New Site Update notification which will go to everyone. If you want to receive an email telling you that a new entry has been posted on this diary you'll still need to become a follower.
Followers will now get e-mails sent to them and a notice in the Inbox icon. You can follow a diary and turn off the e-mail notification using the Email Preferences which is available at the bottom of the Inbox popup when you click it.
If you're online when a friend you follow posts a new entry then the Inbox message will be shown (almost) immediately.
New features will come along to be added to the Notifications Inbox icon as we go forward - including things like 'mentions' which has been on the roadmap for a long time!

When saving an entry, do we still need to click Save and Notify for the notification to show up in follower's inbox? Or will it go to their inbox with a Save only?
You still need to click save and notify. This is deliberate so that you retain overall control of when notifies are sent as there may be occasions when you want to make an entry (or more likely an update) without notifying everyone again.

Ah, you need to be a Plus user to post public entries. Being a Plus User also adds other features like embedding images, youtube videos, tweets etc - and others.
