Managing Your Diaries

A diary is the container for all your entries. You can have multiple diaries to keep different areas of your life separate — a travel journal, a fitness log, a private diary, and more.

Creating a diary

  1. From your Dashboard, click Create Your First Diary (if you have none) or find the My Diaries card and click Create New Diary.
  2. Enter a title.
  3. Free accounts are limited to one diary, which is always private.
  4. Plus members can create unlimited diaries and choose their privacy level at creation, and can change the privacy setting of any diary at any time.

Switching between diaries

When you have more than one diary you can switch in three places:

  • My Diaries card — click the Switch button next to any diary in the card on your Dashboard.
  • Desktop header menu — click your username in the header to open the dropdown, then choose Switch Diary.
  • Mobile popup menu — tap the orange pencil button in the footer bar to open the popup menu, then tap Switch Diary.

Diary settings

Open Diary Settings by clicking the Settings button on the Control Panel card. The settings dialog has four tabs:

Appearance

  • Title — rename your diary at any time.
  • Privacy — Private (only you), Followers Only, or Public. Changing the diary-level privacy does not change the privacy of existing individual entries, but DearDiary.Net always chooses the most restrictive setting which means a private diary will never show any entries even if they're marked public. See Privacy & Sharing for more information.
  • Theme — choose from 8 colour themes. Free accounts can use Orange, Green, Red, and Blue. Plus Members can also choose Teal, Yellow, Pink, or Purple. More colour themes are planned for the future and may be available to Plus Members by the time you read this.
  • Card transparency — Choose to have information cards show with a transparent and blurred background or be completely opaque.
  • Rounded corners — toggle rounded corners on cards.
  • Sharing buttons — show or hide social sharing buttons on entries.
  • Allow comments — toggle whether readers can post comments on your entries.
  • Header / Footer — add a custom header and/or footer that appears on every page of your diary when viewed publicly. Supports rich text.

Images

Set a light-mode and/or dark-mode background image for your diary. (Plus only)

Trackers

Enable or disable individual trackers for this diary (mood, sleep, weight, etc.). See Features.

Followers

View the list of people following this diary, approve or block pending follower requests, and toggle auto-accept for new followers.

Diary cover page

Each diary has a cover page at /diary/:diaryId. When viewing your diary cover you'll see an Edit Cover button (a pencil icon) to open the editor. The cover supports a full Lexical rich-text layout — use it as an introduction, an about page, or leave it with the default diary title display. A small cog icon to the right of the icon also brings up the diary settings dialog again.

Deleting a diary

Diary deletion is currently handled by contacting support. Entries can be deleted individually from within the diary.
