Hypermilers?
Thu Jun 12 2008

Has anyone else heard of these? They are calling them Hypermilers, and they are people who have found ways to stretch their gas mileage.

Little things like:
-Parking nose out so you don't have to waste any gas backing out then driving forward

-Stay in the right lane and drive the speed limit or slightly slower

-Keeping a large space in front of you to avoid braking and accelerating

-Taking things out of the car to make it lighter

-Riding the bumps on the right side of the right lane under wet conditions

-Turning off the engine if you will be stopped/idling for more than a few seconds

There are many other tricks. Google Hypermilers to find out how you can stretch your gas dollar. I already do some of these things. Where Hubby gets 16 or 17 MPG in the truck, I can get up to 23 MPG (as long as it is mostly freeway, not-so-much when I drive in town).

There was an article in NYT about them. Some of those don't work for hybrids though. My car already turns its engine off when I'm stopped, so it actually would cost me in gas to turn it off and back on. Others, like the parking nose out, don't make a lot of sense to me. Either you back into the space, or you back out; you pay the piper before or after the tune, but you still pay.

Thanks for that. Even if it saves only 1-2 mpg, it's a saving! Gas is almost $4.50 in this area.
