Deleting Comments
Thu Jul 22 2004

It was suggested to me that I may want to delete some comments that are left here in my diary.

While there are many reasons most people would delete comments, particularly derogatory ones, I don't and won't delete comments. If someone takes the time to leave a comment, even an inane one, I will give them the respect of having taken that time to voice their opinions or just make a statement.

There is one exception. Should a comment be so graphically explicit in nature, such that I would not want my kids reading it (they all read my diary), I will then delete it. So far in the two and a half years I’ve been here at DD I’ve only had to do that once. I doubt I’ll have to do it again often, if ever.

I appreicate everyones thought good and bad as well. Why would your children be reading their mothers private thoughts? What is really yours, and yours alone--if not this. It's important for everyone to have their own personal space, and I dont' think I'd think it was appropriate for children to be reading their mothers journal--do you let them listen to all of your adult conversations as well?

I haven't been writing nearly as long as you have, and I hope I never get a comment that I would want/need to delete.

I know some people are rude and delight in offending, and if they get their kicks that way, I feel sorry for their small minds.

    Shalom

In a similar vein, before I started using the authenticated comment only feature I used to have the quandry of whether or not to resond to anonymous private entries in public. Of course, to do that I'd have to make the private entry public. I could never see the harm in that since it was anonymous - if whoever left it didn't want to be seen leaving it, "anonymity" was sufficient to cover all their bases. I only did it a few times, and looking back there were additional opportunities that I wish I'd taken to do it.
