Stumbling Through The Day
Wed Jun 23 2004

I finally fell asleep last night around 1 or so, and was up and getting ready for morning appointments around 7:30 this morning. I had just enough sleep to allow me to stumble my way through the day with minimum coherency.

I spend a couple hours up at the school this morning convincing them that the VA should pay for the current class I’m taking. I think I got my point across, and hopefully I will see positive results in next months check. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but as with all government related things, I’m not holding my breath.

We have a relief from the heat today with overcast skies and cool weather. After the past couple days I think we all appreciate this change! #1 & #2 are tucked back in #1’s room playing their Gameboys, and #3 is firmly entrenched on the PS2 in the front honing his gaming abilities with the kind of attention a bull dog gives a bone.

Hubby and I are planning a run down to Kelso on Sunday to bask in Drum Corps and revisit old friends we come across there. #1 & #2 have talked us into letting them stay home during that time, but #3 wants to come with us. With Hubby and #3 to gang up on me, I strongly suspect our diets on Sunday will consist mostly of items found on the Taco Bell menu.

#2 asked me the other day if I had any plans for one of my empty containers. I asked him why, and he responded with the question that if I didn’t, could he have it to grow something in? He wants to have a mini-garden, and try growing a rose. So… I told him to go mow some lawns to earn some money, and I would take him to select a rose and get the soil for the container. He seems quite excited about it. Only time will tell if the excitement continues.

I love how you are teaching your boys responsibility; having #2 earn the money for the rose and soil. Way to go Alli. :)

A rose? I remember the first thing I ever had any interest in growing was food - a watermelon, if memory serves me right.

May I suggest, since your son is a first time rose grower, that you look into Jackson & Perkins roses? They are a bit more expensive than the average but they are disease resistant and bloom well in their first year, where so many others don't. This will give him a good idea of that the standard is for rose growing. They have a nice website: http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/

I have found that nurseries tend to sell their roses cheaper than the site does (probably due to volume discounts) but it is an excellant sourse of information so that he can choose a rose he likes and know petal count, scent, growing habits, etc.

    Happy roses to him!
