Prior to any major test, you can see students stuffing themselves with information, only to regurgitate it shortly thereafter onto the test, ridding their minds of valuable knowledge.
Admittedly I suffer from this. I’m trying to develop better study habits, but am having difficulties doing so. Studying at home while the family is here is nearly impossible, but does manage to get scraped out. If I ever manage to get myself back onto a regular sleep pattern, and maintain it, I will be going into the school in the mornings to do my studying. All too frequently though, as soon as the kids are out the door on their way to school, I’m on my way back to bed to catch up on sleep that was missed the night before for any one of a dozen reasons.
Is there a cure for Educational Bulimia? Possibly. The only cure I know of is if instead of two or three major tests a term, the teachers give one or two small exams a week. Using those one or two smaller exams, create two or three bigger tests. The information would have been studied in a manner conductive to long term memory retention, and students would likely do much better on the major tests.
OK, I’ll get off my educations soap box now.
