I did come up with a minor dilemma with the upside down tomato hangers. The shepherds hooks I got to hang them from are unable to support them.
Bummer.
I resorted to hanging them from a couple corners of the dog run until I can figure something out. They should be good there for a while. That being the case, I’ve only put up two of them, and have two waiting in the wings until I can figure something out. The other two are reserved for peppers, so those will have to wait.
I would like to put in melons this year, but that will have to wait at least until next payday until I can get what I need for the only part of my yard I will be able to put them into. Only one part of my yard gets enough sun for melons (and pumpkins), and that is along one side of our fence in the back yard. Of course there is grass along there, and since Hubby does not like having to move containers every time he mows, I’m going to put a strip of weed control fabric down along the fence, and put the melons and pumpkins in containers. I will likely anchor it with gardening bricks or cottage stones.
One think I’m thinking of doing with the melons is something I came across on the net. Make containers by recycling tires. Stack them 2 or 3 high, then fill them with soil. With the black tires soaking up and retaining the heat during the day you have a container perfect for plants that love to have their feet kept warm. It won’t be the most attractive container, but it will be very cost effective as I know several places in the area I can get old tires for free.
I’m fairly sure this is just one more thing that will convince Hubby that I’ve lost my mind!
