Praying Mantis
Sun May 23 2004

Praying Mantis are cool. Yes, they are creepy-crawlie bugs, but they are creepy-crawlie bugs that can get up to six inches long and EAT EVERY OTHER CREEPY-CRAWLIE BUG AROUND THEM!!!!! That alone makes me their #1 fan.

I think Praying Mantis are the only bugs #3 is not afraid of. Oh, those and stick bugs. His class did a thing in science a couple years ago with stick bugs, and he is OK with those now. He is also OK with worms, but I don’t consider those to be creepy-crawlie’s as they are good for my garden and great for fishing!

For more information on Praying Mantis, check out the Ohio State University fact sheet on these beneficial little critters.

Instructions can be found in the book '63 Easy-To-Crochet Pattern Stitches Combine to Make an Heirloom Afghan' by Leisure Arts. Walmart carries it for $3.58. It's easy - here's the pattern:

(This is just for the square, if you want to make it afghan sized you need to chain a multiple of 4 + 1 - say chain 101 with a K or N hook.)

    Chain 25 loosely.
Row 1: single crochet in second chain from hook and in each chain across.
Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), turn; double crochet in next single crochet. *Skip next single crochet and pull up a loop even with hook, (yarn over and draw through two loops on hook) twice (Slant Stitch made); repeat from * across to last 2 single crochets, double crochet in last 2 single crochets. 5 Slant stitches.
Row 3: Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each stitch across.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until square reaches approx. 7 inches.

Alli, the slant stitch is a really long, slightly crooked double crochet. Hopefully my picture helps. Let me know, I can zoom in on it closer for you so you can get a better idea.

And - the best part - the female mantis usually EATS the male mantis after connubial bliss.
    Really.

You need to get hold of a giant split leave philodendrons. That would be awesome, although I guess the water might leak out a bit.
