Turkey Day anticipations
Wed Nov 27 2002

With tomorrow being Thanksgiving, one would think that I had everything ready to go. In actuality, I'm waiting to hear from Hubby as to what our plans are. I'm hoping I hear from him soon, as I may have to go shopping and I'd like to do it before the stores are too crowded.

The kids have a half day of school today. They don't know it yet, but when they get home they will be doing the chores they neglected to do for the past few days. As I want them to have good days at school, I'm going to wait until they get home to tell them.

Other than that, my big plans for the day will be to find the Christmas lights. Our Thanksgiving weekend tradition is for Hubby and the kids to put up the lights. While they do that I will try to bake something yummy as a reward for all their hard work.

I don't know why I've been thinking about this, but for the last few days I've been thinking about fruit cake. Now, I could understand these thoughts if I were a fan of fruit cake. I have never cared for it, and don't think that it is a taste I will acquire at this age. I would, however, like to try baking a fruit cake. I am wondering if I can play around with the recipe enough to come up with a combination agreeable to my palate. Perhaps using lots and lots of rum or Bourbon. Maybe even both! I think I will start with this recipe and go from there.

1 cup brown sugar
4 large eggs
2 cups dried fruit
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 bottle of your favourite whiskey

Sample the whiskey to check for quality. Take a large bowl. Check the whiskey again to be sure it is of the highest quality. Pour one level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and beat again. Make sure the whiskey is still okay. Cry another cup. Turn off the mixer. Break two eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of fried druit. Mix on the turner. If the dried fruit gesstuck in the beaterers, pry it loose with the drewscriver. Sample the whiskey to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt or something, who cares? Check the whiskey. Now sift the lemon juice and strain the nuts. Add one tablespoon sugar or something. Whatever you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out the window, check the whiskey again and go to bed.

Years ago I used to make a "Friendship Fruitcake" which was the best fruitcake ever. The key was you make your own schnapps from a starter and tins of fruit cocktail. starter spoiled though, dangit.

I can feel the effects of that fruit cake from here by diffusion.
My kids have a half day today also. And some room cleaning also.
I have been madly washing windows---all the sun trying to shine through is making me crazy, they are filthy. Luckily hubby is doing the outsides.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and remember---Survivor is on!

    I watch Y and R, have since I was a teenager.
A few more minutes, then it is Survivor time.
We are thinking of getting a Playstation 2 as a Christmas gift for the youngest.. I think my husband wants it as much, this would effectively take care of the two of them. Of course, the gift tag would be in my son's name...
    Alrighty, time to get comfy.
