The Mantids Have Landed!
Fri May 02 2008

Among my many errands today has been the search of praying mantis egg cases, and I met with success at my second stop! The egg cases are now out hanging on my blueberry bush waiting to hatch and start gobbling up all the creepy-crawlies that keep feasting on my foliage. I just wish they also ate slugs...

I also found a place to obtain red wiggler worms. I’m hoping to get over there this afternoon to purchase some to add to my compost pile.

In addition to that #2 and I made a stop at the local farm supply store to pick up some bales of wood shavings. These will be used as mulch in the back yard around the fruit trees and to create a “path” through the veggie patch for easy access and awesome weed control. This reminds me, I need to get my butt out there and plant some veggies today. I’ll go check to see if it is dry enough so I won’t get too soaked while completing said task.

First though, lunch; left-over Tuna Casserole, here I come!

How do you find mantid egg cases? I sure could use some help with the aphids on the climbing rose. It was planted by a former neighbor, and I've been taking care of it since she moved. The aphids are fierce this year.

When I was about 8 years old, I found a cocoon in the back yard. I was simply convinced that it was a butterfly. I begged my mom to bring it in. We put it in a terrarium with twigs, etc. and I spent several weeks hovering over it, waiting for my beautiful butterfly to emerge. Imagine my horror when it did finally open and 80 kajillion baby praying mantis's emerged. I can laugh about it now but as a relatively small child it totally freaked me out!

I saw one ladybug a day or so ago. That's strange, too, because they're not infrequent in this neighborhood. But the aphids seem to have disappeared. As for kids in the neighborhood to catch mantises, this is not a kid neighborhood.

    Thanks for the tips, though.
