Comfy Thoughts
Sun Jun 05 2005

Today is a lounge around in my sweats and a t-shirt while I put up applesauce and asparagus. I won't know until a little later if I will be able to get to the apricots today or not.

Time will tell!

I've harvested the entire first round of radishes from the garden, and the next wave is coming in strong. The lettuce and chard look like they will be the next harvest items and the beets close behind them. All of my peas and beans are in bloom, and I noticed little yellow buds on one of the tomato plants yesterday. The blueberry bush is doing much better now that I have been keeping Indigo away from it. She could sit and graze on the green berries forever if I let her!

Sometime today I need to get the two pepper plants I purchased yesterday into their intended containers. The two raspberry bushes are finally into the ground, and now I need to start looking at my next purchases. Since I lost the snail vine’s I had started, I went online yesterday and purchased a seedling to be sent to me. I am hoping that it will arrive sometime this week.

I purchased a trellis yesterday for the honeysuckle, I’m hoping Hubby gets home early enough today (and the rain holds off) that he can put it up this evening. I will probably get another trellis today or tomorrow for the snail vine and have Hubby put it up before he leaves Tuesday so I can get it in the ground and not worry about it. I’m still debating whether I want to put it along the fence line, or next to the kitchen window. Since the fence area gets more sun, it will probably end up there.

Boy am I enjoying this new sunny yard! I have so much more available to me than I did when the entire yard was shaded by the Douglas Firs! Of course, I may change my tune as the summer comes around. We will see how often I have to run the AC this year and then possibly re-assess my enjoyment of the yard.

It's a constant trade off which is more valuable. Shade is wonderful. But there are a lot of plants that like full sun too. . . But I gotta say... at least one shade tree is a must.

A 15-year-old boy who *wants* to work during the summer? I'm impressed. And he did the application all on his own. Be proud!

I had forgotten that you had moved. It sounds like you are putting your yard to good use. We have alot of shade trees around our house. While I use the AC, I do keep it around 78/80* because of all the shade trees. Of course, there have been 2 trees to fall during storms over the last 9mo so there is a good possibility, I'll be running it a bit more. But I do have to say, despite the age of the house, its pretty well insulated.

Enjoy your trip to Vegas and have a great week!

    :)

I hate to burst #2's bubble but Fred Meyer will not hire anyone under 16. Both my kids tried and were told it is the policy of the store not to hire under 16 and when they are 16 they are only allowed by law to work up to 20 hours. Most places actually only give kids that age about 15 hours. My kids also found out that all the fast food places do not hire unless your 16. We were not able to find anyplace that took 15 year olds. Only berry picking, baby sitting, and lawn mowing. Poor kid, I feel for him. My daughter was the same way. She tried and tried when she was 14 and 15. She fianlly got her job only after she turned 16.

My daughter (now deceased) and her husband lived in Vegas. It's an exciting place to visit, but I'm happy to remain a California girl.

My husband and I lived in El Paso for awhile, and that's where I learned that the desert is not my milieu. Bloody noses and heat rashes.

But have fun in Sin City while you're there.

    Shalom

Oh, it is a crazy wierd and fun place, that town. You MUST go see the ceiling at the Bellagio. Put that on your list. I mean it now...

And for heaven's sake, set aside 20 dollars to put into the slot machines. It's kinda fun. You can't help yourself. Do the nickles. You can play longer!!! :-)
