What is this Where's George thing?
Wed Jan 19 2005

I came across this about a year ago, and I've played casually with it since then. There is a website out there called Where's George that is something of a Where's Waldo for anyone who ever comes across American currency.

The trick of the game? Enter as many bills as you can get your grubby hands on, spend said bills and see how many get entered again, how far they travel, and so forth. There are even places online where you can buy stamps to mark bills before sending them back out into the population (with bright red ink to capture anyone's attention so they can start doing the same) to circulate. No, it isn't considered defacement of currency as the bills are not damaged and are still able to be spent.

Go check it out and join the fun!

I usually mark my own bills with a brightly colored extra-fine-lined sharpie. Along the edges where it'll be seen, but not really making the bill unusable.

RYN: I mark my own bills, I have two stamps. One is the circular stamp that goes around the Fed. Reserve mark, the other is three lines of type which I put on the back of the bill. In a pinch I will write on the back of the bill along the bottom and squeeze the URL on the front of it on the widest margin I can find. I've only found 3 marked bills so far, in nearly THREE years, can you imagine?? I've had 204 hits and entered 1,561 bills so far. I don't handle much cash but what I get I EMS. Currently #41 in the state of Georgia. Not bad! ;o) Ask a Georger a question, get their full stats in response.
