Homework, Computers and Allergies... Oh My!
Sat Oct 23 2004

I’ve been trying to do homework for the last 5 hours. It is like driving down dead end roads, I keep running into roadblocks. My homework for my computer class ran into version incompatibilities. I tried a few creative (albeit unsuccessful) work around options, but finally came to the conclusion that short of going out and buying the current release of Visual Basic I’m going to have to wait until I can get back on the school computers. I shot off an e-mail to my instructor before closing my computer book and opening my math book.

That’s when the fun started. Between the kids doing chores, my cycling through laundry, dishes being washed, Hubby and #3 working on his room, and a passel of teenagers arriving after the kids were done with their chores, doing anything that required concentration was out of the question. I gave up and started dinner. It should be ready around 5 or so.

We had promised the kids we would take them to see the Terminal tonight at the local theater. This theater has three free movies each weekend, so all we will be paying for is popcorn, snacks and drinks. Those too are bargains as we aren’t dealing with a big commercial theater. I think I remember popcorn running $1.25, drinks about the same, and other snacks vary in price. I don’t believe anything is over $5.

Yesterday I took Rocky to be groomed. He has been scratching like crazy lately and driving everyone nuts. I figured he has fleas, but the groomer reports that nope, just dry itchy skin. We had him completely clipped back (verging on being scalped) and with this cut we can see what looks like an allergy rash everywhere on his body. Poor puppy! I immediately had us start adding some olive oil to his food (we had a Springer years ago with similar issues and this is what the vet ordered), and started researching skin allergies in dogs online.

Did you know that you can give dogs Benadryl?

I gave Rocky a very small dose of Benadryl, and he was able to get through the evening without constant scratching. Ditto for this morning, and I’m noticing him starting on his scratch-a-thon recently so I think it’s time for another dose. I’m trying to limit his doses each day until I can get him in to our vet. With luck I will start to see improvements before then.

Poor Rocky, I hope you find the answer soon. Itching is the worst and a dog just does not understand that scratching makes it worse.

Poor pooch! No, I didn't know about the Benadryl. I do know that it knocks me for a loop. I have a friend with a Chow that has itchy skin. I'll mention the Benadryl to her.

Interesting things we learn here on DD.

    Shalom

Sounds like he has a food allergy. Smaller dogs get food allergies. We had to switch to a special food for Princess. If she gets anything else she scratches constantly.Too much Benydril is bad for their liver.
