Tough Decision
Sat Apr 17 2004

After stumbling through trying to do my homework, and a subsequent display of extreme emotions (does that sound better than tantrum?) I spoke with Hubby about my school, my expectations, and the reality of my capabilities of juggling the family, house and school, we came to a decision. For this term I’m going to drop one of my classes and try focusing on acing the other two, then re-address the one I’m going to drop next term.

You’ve already guessed which one I’m dropping, haven’t you?

For this math class, I need to take it at a time which I’m not plagued with any other homework or studies hanging over my head. That and I need to find a different instructor than the one I currently have. While she is undoubtedly intelligent, and a good teacher for most, my learning style and her teaching style just don’t jive. Her lectures go so fast I can barely keep up with the note taking, and there is no opportunity to ask for clarification or further examples from her.

I need further clarification, and have DOZENS of questions. I need to find a teacher who is definitely more open to having questions asked of him or her.

Ah well, time to go knock out the computer assignments I have coming due next week!

I think you made a wise decision. When you spread yourself too thin, everything suffers.

Hope this takes the pressure off.

It sounds like a good plan to me Alli~ I can't imagine how you can do all you have to on a daily basis. Better to do the class well than to suffer through it, you may end up not understanding it and that could endanger your subsequent courses.

I think I'm coming to your house for dinner tomorrow night - you cook good stuff! Plus there's chocolate! Well, wait, you come here. I was planning on making stuffed shells tomorrow night.

RYC: I'm seriously contemplating a yard sale, but (un)fortunately you know as well as I do where any extra fundage would go - yarn! We can afford the pipe but the price is just so high that our feelings got hurt about it. We will probably end up with it soon enough, but what a shock that was!

    Hugs,
    Julie

Those are very good decisions. I know from experience that I relate different to different teachers as well. You need to get something out of the class, and it's good to realize that this is just not right for you. One thing I wish I'd done more of was take advantage of tutoring, especially for me with math. When I am enrolled once again I am going to be sure to ask for help with that as it is a tough subject for me.

You have a lot on your plate right now. It's tough juggling everything, but it will be worth it when it's all over and done with!

Are you allowed to take "distance learning" classes and transfer the credit? That might be a way to help set the pace you need for the course. The Prof has a Calculus distance learning course he offers through his college, though I'd have to check to see if it's Calc 1,2 or 3. I know there's lots of other courses out there, though.
