Many top names in the sports world have volunteered to be in this program. Among them is Tiger Woods. With the case of Mr. Woods, he has become an e-mail pen pal with an Air Force officer. Through their e-mails they discovered that they went to the same college, at the same time. While they were not acquainted with each other, they did know some of the same people.
This sounds like such a cool program. While I was deployed in support of Desert Storm just over 13 years ago, we had the wonderful experience of writing back and forth to school kids. There was a popular program in which classes would "adopt" a soldier, or in some cases a whole group of servicemen & women. Besides the letters that flew back and forth, care packages were also sent from the kids to the GI's. It was fun to see what kinds of items the kids would send. Frisbee's were quite common, as were a wide variety of fruit snacks and trail mix snacks.
I think it is so unfortunate that the sending of care packages is now discouraged due to issues with mail tampering and undesirable substances making their presence known through the mail system. For anyone wishing to become involved or support our troops through various means, contact your local Red Cross to see if they have any GI support programs in your community.
