A Day at the Beach
Fri Jun 13 2003

Today was a day at the beach for #3. Literally. The third grade took a field trip today to Tolmie State Park on Puget Sound. He came home tired and happy.

I do pity anyone who visits the park after his visit today. I don't think there is a grain of sand left on the beach. It all came to my house in his clothes and other belongings. It doesn't matter though, he had a good time.

#2 had something of a different day. Someone has been using his lunch card at school without his (or my) permission. These lunch cards are like a debit card. I put money in the account and he uses it until the account is empty. Over the past two weeks, a boy in his class has managed to eat his way through more than $25 worth of lunch items. No one would have been the wiser about it had he not bragged to half of the class about it. When called on the carpet about it, he denied it, despite having several other classmates coming forward to say he had told this to them, and one other child witnessed him doing it at lunch on two separate occasions.

This kid is the typical bully. He is easily twice the weight of #2 and a good 6 inches taller than him. He is not only the largest (in all senses of the word) child in the 7th grade, but in the whole school. He is the kid who you know was stealing lunch money from other kids since kindergarden and bullying everyone who caught his eye. #2 had problems with this boy earlier this year, and we had a conference with the school about it then. Now this. The school has been made aware, and it has been passed on to the boy's father and grandmother that we will not tolerate this kind of harassment from him. We have gotten a verbal that he will make restitution for the missing money on the lunch card, and a good percentage of the school staff now has him under a microscopic view regarding his behavior towards other classmates. Evidently this is not the first time these kind of accusations have been brought against him.

#2 tells us that during the lunch break the boy came up to him and made a threat towards him. What he did not realize was when he did the the vice-principal was standing right behind him and heard every word. #2 says he did not see the boy in class for the rest of the day. He was rather smug when he told me this.

Oh Wow! #3 did have an excellent time, didn't he? I envy him and all the other kids in his group. It must have been an excellent trip and it sounds like they had a lot of fun getting dirty and carrying all that sand home with them.
About #2, I hope his problems will truly be over soon. I hate bullies and how they make school life hell for other children.
    Love,
