Darn Extensor Digitorum
Tue Mar 25 2003

How familiar are you with the muscles in your arm? Let me give you a down and dirty course in The Anatomy of the Forearm. The muscles in the forearm are the Brachioradialis, the Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus, the Extensor Digitorum, the Extensor Carpi Ulnaris and the Flex Carpi Radialis. While you sit and flex, twist and in any way, shape and form move anything below your elbow, these muscles are working in tandem to make this magical movement come to be.

Now, the Extensor Digitorum extends the four fingers, but not the thumb. It also extends the hand at the wrist joint. You can feel it by placing one hand on top of the other arm and flexing your fingers. If you can do this with the hand on the same arm you are feeling, call me. We can make a fortune with you in the circus.

On January 6 of this year I went back to school. Yes, this is going somewhere.

I have spent the better part of the last 15 years at a keyboard, seldom doing any actual writing other than a grocery list and the yearly Christmas cards. All of the sudden I am taking notes at a furious pace and doing homework daily. My right forearm is seeing more action than a teenaged boy with his dad's magazines.

My aforementioned Extensor Digitorum is so sore I can hardly uncurl my fingers from their grip on my pencil. Writing is becoming a thing of agony.

Of course I have a test tomorrow. I wonder if my teacher will let me do this orally. Since it is math, probably not eh?

Damn.
