We arrived early to get good seats, and did. While waiting the 1/2 hour before the movie started a group of 4 or 5 young men sat behind us. I was paying no attention to them until one, who was on his cell phone talking to his girlfriend, began using incredibly foul language. It was fuck this and shit that with a swear word used almost for every other word. I turned around (and that was when I first noticed he was black) and said "Pardon me, I don't mean to be rude, but I have young children with me and would you please watch your language?"
Those exact words. He gave me a blank stare, then told me to move if I didn't like what I heard. I informed him that I didn't want to move, and at that point he accused me of being racist. He spent the next 15 minutes on his cell phone telling the person on the other end of the line that he was seated behind some racist white lady who was going to have him kicked out of the theater.
HUH????? How the hell do you get that message from what I said?
Now, I have never been accused of being a racist before. I did not know he was black until I turned around, and no matter what his color, gender or anything I would have said the same thing to ANYONE else.
Am I racist for not wanting my children to be subject to that kind of language? I don't think so. Prudish perhaps by some standards, but not racist.
I freely admit that I use some of the language I heard him using, but NEVER around my children. I had one person tell me that makes me a hypocrite. I dunno 'bout that.
So...am I a racist? You tell me.
