Learning How NOT to Crash A Motorcycle
Sat Jun 11 2011

A few weeks ago, Hubby bought himself a Honda Goldwing to use as a commuter vehicle for work. With this situation, we both thought that learning to drive one might be a good idea. Thus we found ourselves signed up for a Basic Motorcycle Safety class. Our first night of class was Thursday, all classroom, and today was the second class in which we were actually riding the school bikes.

I should point out here, that as far as I can remember, I’ve never driven a motorized two wheeled vehicle. I dated boys who drove motorcycles when I was younger, and therefore I have ridden on a bike. I discovered today just how different the experiences are.

I managed to not crash into anything except the ground, a result of accidently shifting into neutral, stalling the bike and executing a slow smooth drop. No injuries, no scratches to the bike, just some bruising to my nervous and shaking ego.

At one point I thought I was doing kind-of OK, but felt I was travelling far too fast, making me even more nervous. I took the chance to glance down at the speed odometer to see what terrifying break-neck speed I was travelling at.

10 MPH.

Boy do I need a LOT more practice. I’m fairly confident that I will not pass the driving portion of the school tomorrow. I actually view the fact that having survived my first day of driving a motorcycle is a good thing, and I’ll feel even better if I don’t dump the bike tomorrow.

I wanted a little motorcycle someone left at one of my son's properties. He "nixed" that emphatically. He reminded me of all the times he wanted to get and ride one growing up, and I denied him...called them "murdercycles". Now it's come back to bite me. I really want a Vespa.
