An Experience I Hope To Never Repeat
Wed Oct 15 2008

#1 and #2 both had their wisdom teeth out yesterday morning. I had orientation for my new position, and we had had the appointments for a long time by the time I got hired on by the government, so I made arrangements for #2’s girlfriend to transport the boys to and from, and keep an eye on them.

The boys left the oral surgeon’s dopey, which I’m told was quite humorous, and had tomato soup for lunch once they got home, and then promptly fell asleep.

Around 3 or so, #2 woke up and started in with the shakes. These weren’t “shiver shakes”, but more of an “entire-body violently trembling shakes”. After the shakes stopped, so did his breathing, and we would have to shake him into starting to breath after every episode of the shakes (4 to 6 an hour). So off to the ER we went… and stayed for the next 6 hours while #2 continued to come down off the IV drugs used to put him out for the surgery.

To say I was scared would be the understatement of the century. #2’s girlfriend was still here with him, and I am not sure how I would have gotten him to the ER without her.

He finally got released to go home (I was thinking for the first 4 hours that they would keep him over night) around 11 or so.

I just want to go on record here by saying that I hope to never go through something like that again. Ever.

Scary doesn't even begin to describe the experience!!

Sounds like an allergic reaction, and it should definitely be part of his medical record. Whatever he got, he should never get again!!

It could have been worse. Both boys could have had the reaction.

    Bless

You could have gotten there with an ambulance. I always need some sort of answer in that kind of question, so I thought I'd give you one :D When my daughter had breathing problems they made us wait in the waiting room for 5 hours before they saw us. I have vowed that now if we ever go to the emergency room we'll use an ambulance. If we dont' need an ambulance, then we'll just wait for a doctor appointment. It's actually really helpful to have this rule because now I'm absolutely sure I won't end up at the ER over something more trivial. AND, no wait time.

Seizures are scary. I'm so glad he turned out fine. They might encourage you to test for epilepsy too, but I probably wouldn't worry too much about it. I had a similar experiance and they ran ALL these tests and all of them came back without any information and then they said it was just an allergic reaction. So unless it happens twice, I'd hold off the barrage of tests :D
