The best-laid plans of mice and allimom

My plans have been thwarted by rocks.

I live in what is referred to as a glacial plain. Oh sure, there hasn’t been a glacier here in a gazillion years or so, but nonetheless it is a glacial plain.

I have lived here for a long time, so you would think I would remember that fact; every time we have a yard project that involves digging, I always forget about it until we reach the bottom of the millimeter of topsoil the builder put down before laying the sod in the yard. We need to sink some posts about 2 feet into the ground, so obviously we had to dig below the dusting of topsoil. The good news is that Hubby is collecting a lot more rocks for his rock garden (which has been collecting for the past 3 years with the intention of building in the ambiguously near future).

So, we will be continuing to dig holes to sink poles in for (possibly) the rest of the weekend. We have one hole finished, one partially finished, and 6 to go. I am starting to suspect that we aren’t going to get the fruit trees planted this weekend as they will also require holes dug into the mostly-rocky ground beneath the sod.

That’s OK though, Hubby and I are happier with the fact that we both have the weekend off, and it is time we can spend together before he has to go to Afghanistan later this year. We have a few of these long weekends off together planned for the next few months, and we are hoping that they will be as beautiful as this weekend is turning out to be.
