Lazy Summer Dazy
Mon Jul 17 2006

I had originally planned to run by some of the produce stands and one produce market in my area today, in search of things to can over the next couple days. That got derailed by an extreme sense of lethargy following the vacuuming of every room in my house (except the kids rooms), 3 loads of laundry and some very minor yard work.

It’s a beautiful warm and breezy day, so I’ve got 3 loads of laundry hung in various means throughout the upstairs taking advantage of the day to dry au naturel. I don’t mind not running the dryer at all! The exception to this is that all of Hubby’s clothes that are hanging out to dry, and the towels will go into the dryer to soften up as he HATES the crunchy clothes syndrome achieved by hanging clothes to dry inside the house.

I would love to have an outdoor line to dry them directly in the breeze and sunshine, but unfortunately those are a no-no in my neighborhood. The laundry list of neighborhood rules, rule out hanging laundry outdoors to dry. Stuffy people.

I can live with that though. Of course, every possible hanging surface in my upstairs is currently full, but I can live with that!

Back to the canning issue… we have a new neighbor who we’ve gotten to know over the last couple weeks, and she and I have been comparing canning notes. She is interested in doing pickles this summer, so if I do a batch she would like to do her own batch with me. We will probably do it together at one of our homes, and consign her 7 month old bouncing baby boy to the older kids to watch over while we play with boiling water and glass jars.

I’m also looking forward again to blackberries, and hopefully boysenberries, logan berries and marion berries this year. I’d like to do a few batches of jam for each of them if I can find them. In my wildest dreams I’m able to find tayberries and can do some jam in that. I’m also toying with the idea of putting up some syrup this year. I’ll have to see what kind of mood I’m in when I do eventually get out to the markets!

I had to look up Tayberries. Look like good pie candidates to me. So is there really much difference between say a marionberry and a loganberry?

I don't know marion berries. What are they like?

I haven't done any canning in years and years. In fact, I think the last time was when we lived in North Long Beach. There was a peach tree in the back yard. Oh, I'm not even going to calculate the number of years!

So did all the "yummies" come from anticipation or lots and lots of taste-testing? ;-)

I can't imagine not having an outdoor washing line! Are people in your neighbourhood that scared that they might see someone else's underwear hanging out to dry?

You're so good, doing all your own preserves. Every summer I have good intentions of making jam or chutney from some of the fruit on our trees, but I never seem to get round to it.
